maybe a simple Poll would be something needed to see what the Community thinks.

Which option would you prefer as a Spamming Solution
A? nothing, Raw Spam is Delicious!
B) require a Pay-To-Play Positive Feedback, similar to the Seller Requirement

D) ban Zero Feedback Members from posting URL Links in the Forum.

URL is part of the post so I'm slowly getting there
Yey! You're the best
Or use a Captcha?
do those actually work tho? i mean presumably they do but who knows
They do, the good ones - as they don't only analyze your reply, they know
even before you reply if you're legit or not
Problem is, with AIs Captchas will be obsolete relatively soon.
On the other hand, AIs will be good at detecting SPAM in posts
indeed. ultimately spam cant be fully avoided but that's life and its all
good
If you don't have any interaction with people, you're safer.
But you can't desire this.
Apart some fools, researchers, youngsters for fun, or at a given moment in life

Now you need also to analyze the URL, because chances are that https://www.rebrickable.com/
would be authorized.
Maybe then simply analyze the whole post?

I don't know if they work but one image selection captcha asked me to fill
in 3 ships but there were only 2 visible on the captcha presented. I don't
have a crystal ball, so these captcha verification sites really need to present
the option of "issue with captcha" and feedback to and from them so the
legitimate people can figure out what is wrong and where.
Captchas only work if they are properly designed, if not properly designed, it
reflects badly on the captcha site.
Just my opinion of a very recent captcha I had to try and decode. I ended up
trying a second captcha.

Captchas are always vague, incomprehensible, or, as in your example, not applicable.
(Not even talking about blurry images and/or accessibility problems.)
Give wrong answers and you’ll pass anyway. Or if you give only part of the answer
(they ask for 3, you give 1). You may fail the first time but almost always
pass the second.
Also, they are used to train image recognition systems (“AI”). Are you getting
paid to help them?

No, just genuinely interested in why they expect us to know it all.

Hey, Captchas don't care about your reply.
I mean, a bad reply is (often, not always) a bad reply.
i had that result also so I'm assuming that's good since you also have
it
That's bad news for me tonight - I'm as unique as you are
But the idea is that chances are you're human, NubsGPT.
I'm telling you!
For instance, I've 280 installed fonts on this PC, it's not typical of
a bot PC, etc.
This is shown with amiunique.
As you can see, a Captcha can also measure those things *before* you even start
to answer to see what your percent match being a human - they don't need
your reply

The problem is probabilities multiply. Yes, one can install those 280 *exact*
fonts, but he won't change the 42 specific settings of my browser, and use
the exact version of my DX renderer, and... That makes you mathematically unique.

Technology is amazing indeed!
Yes, think at it next time you use a Private tab or window in your browser, and
don't accept any cookie thinking you're safe.
They don't know you, but they may know *you* are back, they deduct your age,
ethnie, eduction and wealth by various criteria on what you're reading, watching
at, listening to, and boom: they've got all the stats they need (to use or
sell).
And don't even think at a VPN, it's even worse, but it's another
story

Firefox, add-on "I don't care about cookies", that's it, never
more any question asked.
For some sites, like BrickLink or PayPal, it's safer to disable it for this
specific site (one click).

Posts heuristics (Bayesian style), captcha for new users, or why not IP ban (48
hours?) in case of moderated SPAM could be tools to use.
Don't make buyers have to place an order to be allowed post
I like one of these. Option F, maybe?
I agree. None of the above.
F) Make it easier to report spam.
When I report spam, I now have to change my view to see the message ID, go to
the problem center and submit a complaint. After that, the moderators are usually
pretty quick in dealing with the problem.
A simple one-click-report button would make the reporting process more convenient.
Maybe that would help the community to report faster.

Could do with a new reason in the Report a Message drop down to, simply "Spam".
I never know what to pick from the available options, always go with "Message
is Offensive" which makes me look like some sort of Victorian prude.

I use the same, it is at the bottom so quick and easy to find. I doubt the moderators
care too much which reason is given as it is fairly obvious when they see the
message. You can always type SPAM in the reason box if you feel so inclined.

Yah it would be nice for a new drop-down one as I usually say they have something
for sale that isn’t in their bricklink shop which just feels weird

On the moderation side, the reason given in the report / the choice you make
when you report is not very important for spam.
That categorisation helps us understand what you think is wrong with the message.
So it can help greatly for other reports. For instance if you report a sales/advertisement
post, it helps to know that you reported for flooding or because the items are
not in the store.
Note that there’s also no “Spam(mer)” reason/category for banning someone. So
we choose either “Flooding” or “(Other).” Poor spammers can’t understand why
they are banned. But then, they never come back, they always create new accounts,
so we can live with that.

No, bottom of the message, a button "Flag" or such.
leaning more towards D though, as it would (hopefully) eliminate the link spam
entirely while allowing new users to ask questions without buying & without moderator
intervention.... (hopefully)

It sounds like you need solutions that are automated and don't require much
intervention from the moderators. Here are some automated anti-spam measures
that might work:
Advanced CAPTCHA: As mentioned, more sophisticated CAPTCHA systems can be an
effective means of preventing spam bots from registering or posting. CAPTCHAs
can be implemented both during registration and when posting content.
AI/Machine Learning Spam Detection: Use a machine learning system trained to
identify spam. You could initially train the model with data already identified
as spam and allow it to continue learning based on what it correctly identifies.
This could help stop spam from entering the system in the first place.
Automated Blacklists: You could set up an automated system that uses certain
triggers to identify spam. This could include things like the use of blacklisted
words or phrases, links in the first post, the speed of posting, or repeated
posts of the same content.
Rate Limiting: While you already apply some rate limiting, you could implement
additional restrictions based on IP addresses. For instance, limit the number
of new accounts that can be created from the same IP address within a certain
time period.
DNSBL/Bulletproof hosting database checks: You could use a system to check the
user's IP against databases of known spammers or spam-related hosts. These
databases are often free and regularly updated, so you can automatically block
or flag traffic from these sources.
Bayesian Filtering: This is a statistical technique used for spam filtering.
It uses the probabilities of certain words appearing in spam and not-spam messages
to decide whether a new email, or in your case, a forum post, is spam or not.
Remember, the key is to implement a system that is effective at preventing spam
while minimizing false positives that might block genuine new users. Some combination
of the above measures is likely to be the most effective.

Yep, there are technical solutions.
Not 100% perfect, someone will always get through, but fine enougH.

I think Option "D" is the best of the bunch. It may not eliminate all
spam, but it should help to reduce it significantly. It's the least restrictive
and wouldn't require Mods to oversee. However I'd still lke a "Report
Post" button for every post on the BL forum, so that spam/abusive etc. posts
can be identified and removed quickly by Mods.

Agreed, this would be my preference also. Having said that 'stay logged
in on this device' has been broken for 5 years, so I wouldn't expect
coding changes on the forum to happen any time soon.
Instead of placing barriers for all kinds of members to enter, I would like to
see the forum updated with the following options to swithc on/off at a personal
level:
- sales from countries/sellers that DO NOT ship to me
- posts from members below a treshold of feedback where the treshold can be entered
to ones one liking
- ..... (feel free to add )
I think that kind of update/upgrades are way more effective !

I really like the idea of more checkboxes to show hide posts rather than having
to moderate the posts themselves.
The problem with not displaying posts below a user defined feedback threshold
is that it is by definition placing barriers to new members. Bricklink is not
a simple marketplace to find your way round and the forum is the ideal place
for new members to come to for help. If experienced users are e.g. blocking
posts from all under 3 feedback from displaying, then that help will be much
harder to come by. Last thing we want to be doing is putting off new potential
buyers.
I still feel we should have a block / report post button actually in the forum
itself, rather than having to jump through hoops to feedback on things.

Allow admins to completely delete a post from the forum so we never see it. I
see lots of cancelled messages, but even checking the forum regularly, it seems
admins are on top of cancelling the spam. I’ve never actually seen the contents
of one of these spam messages.

F… don't like any of those options. If BL cared what we thought here on the
forum, they would be developing seller tools, not updating tax rules for every
country on the planet. Sorry for the two cents.

LOL
Do not believe it is a seller tool rather a marketplace tool so they can comply
with the changing regs for marketplaces. As a seller none of the tax collections
apply we do not sell into eu; nor states where there is a sales tax ; and soon
into any country which levies a tax on our sales; likr most UK sellers (not registered
for VAT)
Remember Bricklink do not make the rules they have to abide by them..

If it was a "seller tool", they would have made a generic way for all
sellers, no matter the country, to manage and collect taxes in a seller-defined
and customizable way instead of just collecting the tax for us. I wonder where
all the tax money goes and how long it sits in BL bank accounts collecting interest?
I haven't looked into it too closely and don't really care, but just
saying, it's not a seller tool. But thanks for the laugh.

Me thinks you don't comprehend.
They HAVE to.
There's no choice "Oh you know, you can get the Sales tax, or let the
sellers collect them, or no one - no problem".
I'm 1000% sure they would have preferred to build tools and a brand new shining
search engine, a new tags based Catalog, etc.

There should be an I.Q. exam for posting in forum.
