Hi all,
Could you please make the effort of cutting out unnecessary quotes when you answer
a post?
It’s especially difficult and annoying on the readers when there’s a mix of top-
and bottom-posting.
Remember: you write it once but it’s read many times. Take your share of the
load.
Thank you

By quotes do you mean linking other forum pages or using quotation marks

I mean do what I just did and what you didn’t: cut the lines starting with a
right chevron/right angle bracket that the forum automatically adds when you
answer a post.
In your post, you could have cut the end of my message and left only the sentence
you directly answered to. As it is, your answer is sandwiched between the two
parts of my quoted message. That’s a pain to read.

(Snip I might have snipped inconsistently)
Oh I think I used to do that but then one of the inventory admins said I shouldn’t
do that for messages related to inventories so they could look back and I started
doing it here also. I’ll try to start cutting it again

The dots are to fancy tho but I think it’s still best to leave parts in that
are being directly referred to in the response right?

Yes, it does make it easier to read if the bit you are responding to is still
there!

Okay. That’s just one of my orthotypographic mannerisms.
The form doesn’t count much. Everyone does as they want. Just think about making
it easy for your readers.

Yes.

Hear hear. Especially with messages with an entire pages-long quoted post, and
the new info is "+1".
So a "+1" from me on your request.
Niek.

Talking about too-lengthy posts, two that stood out fairly recently was a post
with what looked like the entire BL catalog, and a post that felt it necessary
to regurgitate Pi to 100,000 decimals.
Both are still accessible.
Niek.

Shouldn't this be a setting that forces the post one replies to is NOT copied
into the reply?

That would mean changing the website….
Also, technical solutions rarely solve social problems.

The unique pros / differences of this 2000s Forum are:
* poster ID/FB/me/shop etc are displayed,
* poster can insert a macro tag displaying a catalog item,
* sales post are reflected to the main page,
* catalog request appear here (for those who are interested seeing them, basically
Catalog people and a couple of readers?)
* suggestions posts are counted as votes (which are probably ignored for the
last 10 yrs+ apart rare exceptions).
I may miss some, but roughly that's it.
Apart this, the whole darn 20yrs forum could be rebuilt with far more
modern tools and the above functionnalities added to it + having modern extra
ones (grouping, notifications, quotes, formatting...)

That would be great.
The default view shows recent posts, which encourages quoting. My homepage is
set to "Brief-Without Replies", to open threads in new tabs and click
on "Entire thread on one page" or individual posts to see all replies.

Sadly fallen on deaf ears, even other forum moderators don't do it. Too
bad, on more modern forums it's done by default and you can generally click
to expand for those who don't snip the text themselves.
