I think this relationships is for similar patterns in the same type of parts,
not related to the figure itself.

These similarities are very helpful to highlight, since the key decoration here
- the number of stripes (insignia) are the same, just to make a user double check
the similar torsos to be sure. The collars on these are the easy to spot difference
but this is not mentioned in the description, so it is good to have a warning
to check the similar patterns.

I don't see why the source material matters for this kind of relationship
at all.

Perhaps I should have been a bit more clear about my intentions regarding Star
Wars Minifig part Relationships: Part names need to be descriptive, but also
not overly-long; my goal is to work on improving the names, but also to provide
comparisons to other parts with the same source material (via Relationships),
so that the part titles do not become too long and cluttered.
As for the concern that this torso might be confused with others; I am moving
on to reworking the names of Imperial Officers’ torsos, since the current structure
provides no useful information whatsoever (“Torso SW Imperial Officer # Pattern”).
I am going to be adding things like a description of the rank plaque, printing
details, and other searchable keywords that can be used to find and compare the
parts.

Has BL historically used part relationships for this purpose? Wouldn't categories
be sufficient to identify and distinguish source material?

My understanding of the function of the pattern relationship is that it alerts
people who think they have found the part they are looking for that there is
another, nearly identical part they should be aware of. It's a very important
tool for sellers listing used parts who are looking them up without knowledge
of what set they are from.

Someone who is taking a quick look might not distinguish if not alerted to the
possibility. Also there are people on BL with varying degrees of colorblindness!

Ah, OK - That would be VERY useful to have!
My only concerns are that it would overlap with the upcoming tag system, or
that it would take years to implement (like said tag system). 😕
