The "Technic, Pin with Friction Ridges" has two variants - the old one with thick
walls (2780) and a new one with thin walls (I assume that is the new mold 61332).

I know you can tell them apart by sticking in an 4L "lightsaber" bar - it will
go in the new version, but does not fit in old version.

Is there a way to filter store lots by the old/new style pins, or everyone considers
them virtually the same, and only way to get some of the old ones is to ask seller
to do the aforementioned bar test?

Part in question (see the fourth pic for comparison)

Why I need this - completing an old sets, and want them to be period-accurate.

No, not that old. I mean the "thick" pins that already had the slots. The only
difference is the thickness of the wall.

Not unless they have notes specifically in the description. 1 way to look for
them might be find some lots that were listed before the new mold was introduced.
Also I don’t think any seller would check parts like that considering there very
low value. I would just buy a lot and check them myself

The lot would have to be really old, I think the modern mold appeared in 2000.
As for buying a lot of them and checking myself - already did that, although
I underestimated the "newnes" of used parts lot, only 3 of 20 were the old thick
ones.

I suspect if I ask a seller to rate them by thickness, half of them will not
understand the question, and the other half will call me crazy?
I'll keep an eye out for the description in the lots itself, the crane and
other heavy duty builders must get their strong pins from somewhere, right?

Does it coincide with the squared hole in the end of the pin?

Unfortunately, as the catalogue doesn’t differentiate them, the stores generally
don’t.
And if they do, it will only be in ‘notes’ in their stores.

So you need to look closely in the stores or message the sellers.
And I fear most won’t answer for a 1 cent part….

How many do you need? I'm sure I have some, I'm happy to go digging through
my personal stash of pins

Find stores like mine that specialize in vintage stuff and message them. I've
checked all sorts of weird non catalog variants for people in your situation
over the years.

Thanks everyone for help, I'll look for specialized stores or just buy a
bucket of them next time I order something.
