Hi,

I just saw that ‘deer’ was replaced by ‘elk’ in
[p=3846pb48]

Part No: 3846pb058 Name: Minifigure, Shield Triangular with Forestmen Elk / Deer Head on Green Background with Black Outline Pattern
*
3846pb058 Minifigure, Shield Triangular with Forestmen Elk / Deer Head on Green Background with Black Outline Pattern
Parts: Minifigure, Shield
[p=3070bpb119]

I don’t get why.  It’s clearly a Red Deer (cervus elaphus), not a Wapiti (cervus
canadensis; wrong continent) and certainly not a Moose/Elk (alces alces; wrong
antlers, wrong snout).

Could we have the rationale for that change?

The newest castle set states that it is an elk shield according to the one who
requested the changes.

Cheers,

I actually suggested that it be changed to "Elk / Deer" (as it is now), but whoever
approved it just removed 'deer' from the name entirely. 😕

This change does not make complete sense. It has been called dear head for over
20 years in the BL catalog. Please include it somewhere in the description so
that the item remains searchable.

The newest castle set states that it is an elk shield according to the one who
requested the changes.

Cheers,
Randy

Second this. I'm fine with a change, but no one is going to be able to find
the thing

It could be an Irish Elk (Megaloceros giganteus). That would at least be in the
right continent.

I wouldn’t mind the period discrepancy (I made an aurochs for my future castle
forest) but it’s again the wrong antlers: the Elk’s are flat, leaf-like… well

There should be a "LANG Latin" topic in the forum for the fans

Well, I started it because I wanted to be sure we talked about the same animals
because ‘elk’ has different meanings for US and UK English (surprise!)… but then
it’s also fun

(And it’s not Latin, it’s Latin-like.  Latin de cuisine )

I think we've got here another Communication problem.

They first should've sent an e-mail to the said animal, like:

Deer Elk,

bla bla

(asking her which one she's really).

Female elk generally do not have antlers, so this is a male.

I knew someone would notice that weak argument

Now, ‘wrong continent’ was also about language: elk = wapiti in North America,
in UK English, an elk is a moose, not a wapiti.
But then again, LEGO happily mixes US English & UK English.

So, yeah, let’s say it’s a wapiti.

Cervus canadensis: the one who serves Canada Dry.

Wapitius vulgus would mean something like ‘the one who’s vapid and vulgar’.

Unless this means that the Castle themes actually take place in a post-apocalyptic
future, rather than a romanticised version of the Middle Ages (as is generally
thought). . . 🤔

Well, they can take place anywhere and anywhen one wishes¹

It’s just that, for me, elk = élan (moose), not wapiti, so it’s like calling
the LEGO dogs dingos.

¹ Maybe there’s an old Oldsmobile, a chainsaw and a pump shotgun not far from
the castle….

  Hi,

"The mighty Elk shield. There be forest folk nearby."

If you look at the French and Spanish statements from the instructions:
French Wapiti = Elk (maybe they should have used le cerf instead of wapiti)
Spanish Ciervo = Deer

"The mighty Elk shield" does sound better than "The mighty Deer shield".

I would say it's a Cervus elaphus (Red Deer)

That being said, all elk are deer, not all deer are elk.

Yeah in Spanish that would be this case.

That being said, all elk are deer, not all deer are elk.

All this might be a translation issue probably from Danish to English.

Elk in Danish is Elg, which Google translates back to moose to avoid the above.
Deer is hjort.

It would be interesting to know what the Danish Language instructions say.

I couldn't download the Danish language instructions, it kept defaulting
to Canadian English for me, even with a VPN extension.

Oh, that’s Canadian French in the North-American trilingual version (v39).
In the French (FR) version available on Brickset, it says: “Le puissant bouclier
d’élan.”
(I should have looked at this one sooner, duh.)

And, BTW, that’s another error because that should be “Le puissant bouclier à
l’élan.” *sigh* again…

No wapiti in Mexico and no elk in Spain?

Brickset only has DE, ES, FR, IT, ZHSI, V29 & V39

IT says “dell’Alce” (elk).
DE says “Elchwappen” (elk…).
