Is it even possible for gear to have a color attribute specified in the catalog?
It would be nice to have such a feature, but I thought this color attribute is
not even part of the catalog items table.
Even for parts the color attribute is set only when it is included in an inventory.

Or do you mean the items for sale that are listed with the color = 'not
applicable' flag? If so, how do you fancy the catalog admins are to change
those store inventories?
