I can confirm the OP is correct, the part does not exist. It was originally listed
in 75826 but there was a inventory change that went through on 3/5/17. That was
the only set that piece came in (but not really). I have all 6x6 not the 8x8.
Found this out after someone ordered it from me a few months back.

We really don't do anything. It is up to each seller to correctly verify
their inventory when parting out sets. The set inventories are to be used with
the caveat that they may not be 100% correct. In fact, each inventory has a disclaimer
at the bottom of the page that states "BrickLink does not guarantee an inventory
to be correct and therefore an inventory should be only used as a guide."
