| The current forum setup is basically like a mailing list. Not very easy to navigate
or search.
It shouldn't be hard to setup a phpBB or myBB forum that is much easier to
navigate. It is probably even possible to integrate accounts here.
There's actually already a forum at https://forum.bricklink.com/ for stud.io

Please don't. To me, the Bricklink forum is much easier to navigate and search
through than the Studio one.
You do know that clicking on the small speech bubble icon next to the title of
the mail brings up the entire thread? And that you can toggle between showing
every message and only the thread titles? And that you can filter which categories
you want to ignore? And the power of the macro tags?

I think you are in the minority here because most people I know would prefer
a phpBB forum for communication.
Is there a way to subscribe to threads to get an alert? I didn't find it
in Discussion Forum settings.

This is brought up quite often, over and over, and yet still some people like
this archaic 90's style bulletin board garbage. It's poor and most people
know it. Add it to the list they are working on, like sellers tools (Which I
would much rather have than a new forum).
You can't get notified of any threads here, the best way to find it is to
click those little chat bubbles by your name and it gives you a list of your
posts, highly inefficient.

Thanks for letting me know.
It's puzzling to me because Bricklink is clearly capable of setting up a
forum, since they did with Stud.io.

The Studio Forum is a third-party solution that does not have the features of
the current BrickLink Forum. It is a pain to moderate and would not integrate
with our present admin system. The most users that have ever been on that Forum
at one time is 20.
What we need are notifications, pinning, and some other features to be added
to the Classic Forum. We also don't want to lose our macro tags and the ability
to respond to individual members instead of those one-dimensional lists of posts
where people have to call out usernames to address someone else. They are designed
to keep things on topic, but they cut down on personal interaction.

Some forums allow for hierarchical posting. See MyBB as used by https://forums.ldraw.org/
for instance.
It’s like always reading a thread in its entirety here (clicking “Entire thread
on one page”), except new/unread posts are marked and there are shortcuts to
reach them. But you can’t read individual posts like here.
BL’s forum works like an old-fashioned mailing list / newsgroup. Other forums
work more like chats (with rooms / topics).
Some people don’t like old-fashioned. Some people do. I do.

I do too.
I grew up inside a lot of forums, so when I saw the BL one it was a shock...
at first.
But I now prefer this one than the others, here you can keep up with everything
at a glance.
Hope to see it evolve and some features added like the mentioned, but keep its
core.

I'm going to guess many of the older members will not be keen on change of
any kind
You got a yes from me though.
