For this set

Set No: 8877 Name: Vladek's Dark Fortress
*
8877-1 (Inv) Vladek's Dark Fortress
924 Parts, 9 Minifigures, 2005
Sets: Castle: Knights Kingdom II
Looking at the instructions (https://www.lego.com/en-sg/service/buildinginstructions/8877)
it should indeed be 4x

Part No: 32526 Name: Technic, Liftarm, Modified Bent Thick L-Shape 3 x 5
*
32526 Technic, Liftarm, Modified Bent Thick L-Shape 3 x 5
Parts: Technic, Liftarm {Dark Bluish Gray}
The set was inventoried in 2005 and does not state a source. I think the inventory
is mistaken.

what is the correct part for 8877-1?

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. It looks like you may have discovered
a set redesign!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The original version of the instructions (either 4281689 [IN] or 4281693 [NA])
show four 32140 in what appears to be the old pearl dark gray (PDG) color.

https://www.lego.com/biassets/bi/4281689.pdf
https://www.lego.com/biassets/bi/4281693.pdf

Part No: 32140 Name: Technic, Liftarm, Modified Bent Thick L-Shape 2 x 4
*
32140 Technic, Liftarm, Modified Bent Thick L-Shape 2 x 4
Parts: Technic, Liftarm {Pearl Dark Gray}

It just so happens that this exact part is currently listed as an alternate item
in the set inventory with match ID 4.

The later version of the instructions (4299301 [IN]) show four 32526 in what
appears to be dark bluish gray (DBG).

https://www.lego.com/biassets/bi/4299301.pdf

Part No: 32526 Name: Technic, Liftarm, Modified Bent Thick L-Shape 3 x 5
*
32526 Technic, Liftarm, Modified Bent Thick L-Shape 3 x 5
Parts: Technic, Liftarm {Dark Bluish Gray}
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These parts also have a *long* history in the inventory change logs for the set.

(1) The original inventory on June 19, 2005, had four PDG 32140. (Score - PDG:
4; DBG: 0)

(2) On June 17, 2006, the inventory was updated to add two DBG 32140 without
removing the four PDG 32140. (Score - PDG: 4; DBG: 2)

(3) On May 29, 2008, the four PDG 32140 were finally removed leaving just two
DBG 32140. (Score - PDG: 0, DBG: 2)

(4) On September 22, 2008, an additional four DBG 32140 were added as a separate
line item. (Score - PDG: 0, DBG: 2+4)

(5) On September 24, 2008, the line item containing the two DBG 32140 were removed.
(Score - PDG: 0, DBG: 4)

(6) On August 9, 2014, the original four PDG 32140 were added back in as alternates
to the four DBG 32140. (Score - PDG: 4 as alternate; DBG: 4 as regular)

So according to the change log, it looks like DBG 32140 were used as alternates
to the original PDG 32140 in some sets. But where does this leave the fact that
the later version of the instructions shows four DBG 32526? Why haven't these
been noticed before now and added to the inventory in some way? Did all of these
members just not realize that the 32140's were really 32526's?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Basically, we have to have proof for all of the variations.

The first version of the set with four PDG 32140 is very well documented in this
sealed set being built:

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=404573

Since the original inventory here on BrickLink had four PDG 32140 and the instructions
seem to also show four PDG 32140, those are the ones that should be in the Regular
Items section as they originally were. I will get those moved.

So now we just need to prove the DBG 32140 and/or DBG 32526.

After looking at ~100 used set listings from past auctions, some sets had PDG
32140, some had DBG 32140, and some had a mixture of both. I couldn't find
a sealed one that showed the DBG 32140, but with that many showing up in used
listings and the inventory change request history here on BrickLink, I am 95%
certain that some sets came with DBG 32140.

The only thing I can't find is any existence of DBG 32526 in the set besides
the set of instructions. Until a time that it can ever be proven that those parts
were ever included in a copy of the set, the inventory on BrickLink remains as
correct as possible concerning these parts.
