When I checked the inventory of a few weeks ago, I tried to find out
when the "o" variant first appeared and if that set had the "u" variant at all.
Here are my results:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=3868189 (u clips)
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=3905476 (o clips)
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=3937724 (o clips)
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=3956121 (o clips)
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=4061669 (o clips)
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=4161524 (o clips)
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=4249496 (o clips)
As you can see, only the very early photos show u clips, all later pics show
o clips. This is of course just a simple database, but it gives a hint when the
change from u to o took place.
I also found at least one early photo series of set 7213 and I believe I can
see o clips:

The problem is the o clips variant was added to the catalog in 2011, about two
years after its first appearance. I would say it is unlikely that set 7213 still
had the u variant.
Any thoughts?
Should I submit a change request to remove the u variant? It can be added again
if we find evidence that it was included in this set.
Regards,
Jonas

There is a sealed 7213 set that was opened, built, and photographed on Brickset
that shows the thick open O clips. The review of this sealed set was posted on
December 4, 2009, which would have to make it one of the first available sets,
since the set had an official release date of 2010. I bet 7213 never came with
the thick open U clips. Go ahead and submit the request to remove them.
