Hi everyone,

I've had my first damaged box during shipment in the 3 years that I'm
active as a seller now. The customer asks for a compensation (which is correct,
of course). He's asking for a 50 % discount of the original value of the
set.

The set was a Star Wars 75336 BD-1 set. My question for you is what do you think
a valid percentage would be. The box was banged up pretty good.

Thanks!

He could always get a new replacement box off BrickLink for less than 10 £/$/Euros
including postage - https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?O=75335-1#T=S&O={%22ss%22:%22UK%22,%22rpp%22:%22200%22,%22iconly%22:0}

That's about as much as I'd refund (if I were a seller and in your shoes)
- certainly not 50% of the cost, especially since it's difficult to prove
if the box was damaged during transit or afterwards...

I know collectors like to keep boxes in mint condition, but most collectors would
have bought the set when it was first released and not when it's just about
to retire. Something that old is likely to have shelfwear/scuffs etc.

Thanks for thinking along. It's true that he can order an extra box, but
then if he wanted to keep the set new - sealed for collecting purposes, then
that might be a different value assessment?

True, he could have gotten the set earlier, but you know, anyone can start collecting
at some point...

Interesting to hear other opinions on this, I can imagine I'm not the only
one who had to deal with such an issue.

If he wanted to keep the set new and sealed for collection purposes, he'd
want a return rather than a partial refund. If they are asking fior a discount,
I reckon it would be to build.

I imagine 20% off the regular price is what many retailers would do, like amazon
warehouse. If they wanted more than that, it might be better to ask for it to
be returned for a full refund, then sell it as a new but incomplete set, missing
the box.

Yes, there was, although I don't have confirmation yet that they will cover
for it.

In any case, even if it's covered, I'm not sure I'm willing to let
that aspect come into play. A fair compensation should be determined regardless
of the insurance claim. If not, the customer would get a new - sealed set (although
damaged) almost for free.

Thanks for thinking along.

I would also have to ask - did you do everything in your power to try to ensure
that the box arrived safely? Was it packaged up well? Maybe there are lessons
for you (and other sellers) that could be learned. I've had some shockingly
poor packaging and have been amazed that the orders to me at all and without
loss/damage to the contents.

Somehow my mind went right to getting damaged boxes & contents direct from LEGO
shop at home orders.

As for the issue at hand - if they want a nice box then perhaps you can order
them a box at no additional charge or refund slightly more than it would cost…
otherwise I’d ask for the set to be returned even if you pay for it. 50% is way
too much of a discount.

Did you advertise this as something like "mint condition box!" or
something silly like that?

If you worded it in a way to attract sealed set collectors, then I'd say
you're more on the hook to provide a higher refund.

If you just listed it as new, sealed and the box arrived damaged, I'd only
offer a small percentage (10-15%) assuming the contents inside are fine. Otherwise
have him send it back. You can sell it in dented condition for almost the same
price.

I can only think of one set that justify's a 50% reduction or more and that
is this one:

Set No: 1593 Name: Super Model
*
1593-1 (Inv) Super Model
303 Parts, 2 Minifigures, 1983
Sets: Space: Classic Space

99% of the time though, no sets box is worth as much or more then the actual
set! Some boxes do fetch a price but with that recent star wars set, there is
no way its worth that much imo.

I would suggest do what member rtzx9r said, ask the buyer to return it and offer
full refund. You would get more back selling it as a set without box then taking
off 50%.

Brett.

Pretty much every vintage set, if new and sealed, is worth significantly more
than the parts inside. Even with used sets, the boxes and instructions of vintage
sets are worth way more than the parts.

This advice comes a bit late to help your current situation but if everything
hinges on the box arriving in immaculate condition where a collector intends
to keep it sealed in box then you’re probably better off not doing business with
them. This may not be a popular response for all those hardcore collectors out
there but at the end of the day 9 out of 10 buyers intend to build and maybe
even discard the box and so what incentive is there for a seller to choose to
put their whole sale in jeopardy trying to meet the needs of a collector where
the box is more important than the actual all important contents??

In truth when a buyer chooses to buy a set online its only fair that they ought
to accept the risk/responsibility that comes with outer box damage from transit.
If a buyer truly wants perfect boxes then inspection in a physical store is the
only safe way! Not even buying direct from Lego will guarantee receiving a perfect
condition box?

That said I always ship sealed sets with care to give them the best chance of
arriving in the same condition I would expect to receive myself.

Only the other week a buyer enquired about my sealed Helm’s Deep set asking if
I could take multiple photos of all sides of the box which for me immediately
rang alarm bells because whilst the box was in perfect condition the box is large
an awkward to ship meaning I wasn’t prepared to commit to photos that only raise
a buyers expectations of exactly how they expect to receive it!

I basically told the buyer that if the box is of utmost concern to them then
it would be safer not to purchase from me as I cannot guarantee box condition
from transit especially due to its awkward size. As it happened the buyer turned
out to be the perfect customer as they did still go on to buy the set whilst
also accepting the risk of box damage in transit as they stated that they intended
to open and build the set anyway and only wanted photos to show the set had been
well kept/stored away safely

In short my advice would be to lower expectations prior to shipping and give
the buyer the option of cancelling the order if their purchase is totally reliant
on box condition alone! Explain that your primary focus is selling your sets
to those that intend to open/build

I just had a similar experience these are sales I just want to avoid. My advice
to the buyer was to contact someone offering "mint" boxes. These sellers
have more experience, better prepared to provide the expected service along with
additionalfees . Not that mine aren't in poor condition, but lots can happen.

Thanks guys for all the feedback up untill now.

Yes, the set was announced in mint condition, which it was. It was packed in
a double - sided carton box and wrapped in bubble plastic. From what I can see
on the photo's provided to me, damage occurred by something heavy that was
put on the shipping box causing it to crush. I'm not sure how I could have
packed it other wise.

Also, a full refund was offered upon returning the set to us (we would pay for
return shipping), but the customer just states that he wants a refund of 50 %.

So based on your reactions, I'm gonna keep to me initial proposal: either
send it back and get a full refund. Or, receive a compensation of 25 % if he
wants to keep the set which should be sufficient to get a mint opened box.

Does that seems to be fair?

Yes. Although an open box cannot be mint. Don't use that word when contacting
them.

There is also the possibility that the buyer damaged it with the intention of
getting a discount if the LEGO boxdidn't matter to them. I'm not saying
this is the case here, but that happens sometimes. If a shipping box is heavily
damaged in transit, why would they sign for it / accept it.

Personally I'd have him return it. Refund in full, and then part it out.

People buying sealed sets typically want sealed sets.
