A postage label printed this morning (USPS via Pirate Ship / Pitney Bowes) has
a new scatter-type bar code to the left of the address lines. I would have missed
it, had it not also been printed on the postage paper, below the actual label.

Anyone know what it’s for ?

No idea what it might be for, but I just printed a label and that QR(?) code
is repeated twice, once to the left of the name/address and once at the bottom
right corner.

That’s the one I’m asking about.

You can scan and decode them to see what they say.  My guess is it will be a
tracking or authentication number.

So, I have a theory about the new QR code. All of the USPS route scanners are
custom kit. If USPS is about to transition away from custom electronics, and
towards something more like a cell phone, the QR code may be the first step.
It would take a while for USPS to roll out all the devices, and get everyone
used to them.

If this is the case, then the old large bar code may disappear on domestic labels,
and yield a smaller label. I’m all in favor of that, because the 6x4 label size
is partially what drives the minimum size of the package face. We may see smaller
packages being both allowed and promoted.
