I don't want to name the store, but if you click on the first 10 or so, you
will find it.
Their ID card shows Oregon, but the store shows California. How is this possible?

ID card is where the member lives. If they lived close enough to the state line,

Sales tax is determined by destination of the order, not where the store is or

Uhhhh ID Card depends the member's address on BrickLink AFAIK, that's
it.
There's nowhere a "shop" or "inventory" address - or that's
so brand new I don't know anything about.
And Oregon is 672 miles from California, so the State Line would be pretty wide

Hiya, this is my store and I am a part owner in it. Currently the majority of
the inventory and complete sets are in california but I moved to portland a few
months ago. I maintain addresses in both states but majority of the time I plan
to stay in portland now. I did not update my member address as I have seldomly
purchased on bricklink (maybe 2 orders in 3 months time). I have since updated
my member address to the correct new home address now. The store address is
still correct as of now. My partners still ship out of california mainly. I
did not intend to break any rules doing this.
I only started bricklink in march of this year and I have to tell you how un-user
friendly all of this is. Why can't the store be its own entity and not be
attached to my account? I have been on ebay and amazon for years (over 15 now)
prior and I have to say bricklink is kind of stuck in the stone ages of web development.
I hope this solves all the confusion. I did not intend to cause any issues.
The store feedback is pristine and we intend to keep it that way.

Oh man, I feel bad. Sorry for stirring this hornets nest. I was just tracking
large stores in Oregon and when I visited your store, I noticed local pickup
in a Cali zip code, and thought it strange that the store was located in Cali
but was showing up in Oregon search results.
Maybe you could work with Bricklink to transferred this account to one of your
partners, then you could have a separate buyers only account here in Oregon?
Just trying to spit ball ways to maybe get your buying privileges back.
Agreed, BL is in the 1990-2000's era of web dev, but it works once you get
the hang of it, and fees are great when compared to Amazon and ebay.
Again, my apologies since I feel like I am the cause of this.

Or maybe i did and just never remembered to update it again since I rarely deal
with that part of things. But on the positive side, how you do search for "largest
stores in a state" and get stats like this? I'm curious hour our little
store that only 3 months old is on this list? so small victories? =)

If it is a registered business, then it might be better to have two separate
accounts - one as an individual for personal use only, and one as the business
for selling (and possibly buying) the stock belonging to the business. With no
link or swapping of stock between the two.

Just an update for everyone (or any future readers who search and find this thread).
I had to change my personal address back to match my store address to fix everything.
So for any other store owners in a similar situation, don't cause yourself
headaches and make sure you personal and store addresses match.
I still wish my store can be it's own entity without having to be completely
reliant on a personal account. (even when the store makes a sale, the name and
address provided to the buyer in the email was my personal one which was not
ideal)
Anyhow, I digress. onward and upward. =)

+1 I would fully support better separating personal from business for this. I've
gotten used to knowing that thousands of random people online have access to
my full name and address anytime they place an order but if I ever move id want
to have a "fresh" start and have some privacy again but there doesn't
seem to be an option for that so i know that even if i move anyone can find exact
information about me easily just by placing an order

This is probably involving a number of factors,
In the earliest days of BL (then BB) it was written to be an automated way to
take something that was then being done on LUGNET manually, that being the sale
of excess parts by AFOLs. It was never expected to involve mega sellers that
are more business than AFOL.
When larger sellers arose, then the address for the business became necessary,
because they had business premises. There has never been a BL paradigm for a
seller, but not a person, but many have found ways of shoehorning one into the
other.
BL has been an evolutionary development. Possibly one member that deserves special
recognition, and appreciation, is level88, which IIRC, is an allusion to a gaming
objective from a popular game of the late 1990s.
Rest well DJ

They are literally right next to each other, so Nita's hypothesis is correct
until you find that the store is located in 91604, Studio city, which is in Southern
California.
They offer local pickup in that zip code per their listings.
I wonder if they are using the Oregon address to avoid paying California's

Florida, and Texas are. And thats about all...
|
And the most important cities: Springfield, Punxsutawney...
But I must admit I always mix up Florida and Italy

| Actually, we do know a lot about the U.S. of A. up here. Took a quiz on State
Capitals this week and got 30 of 50 correct. I mean, I'm not sure that most
Americans could name the capital of Vermont.

That's easy. Not many people live in Vermont. So, they don't have a
capitol.
I think the legislators just meet under a big tree.

First geography, then spelling (capitol / capital¹), and now both together!
It’s Montpellier, two Ls! And it can’t be the capital of the US state of Vermont
because it’s in France!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montpellier
———
¹ Yep, those are different words and the difference is capital: a ‘capital’ is
a town (from Latin caput, head) while a ‘capitol’ is a building (from
the temple of Jupiter on the capitolin hill in Rome).

so the government meets under a tree.

Always the question when that name (or a few others) appears….

You mean Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon?
Alaska used to be on this list too, since Alaska doesn’t assess statewide sales
taxes. However, many of its municipalities do impose a sales tax since 2022.

People from outside the US often travel abroad so they tend to know about other
countries' geography. I've only been on the eastern side of the US, but
know all the states from Florida to Maine, and where Texas, California and Washington
state are.

I once received an order from a buyer with a Montana BL address. But, as it
turns out it was really to a big seller in Minnesota.
When they hassled me about something, I made sure to mention that I noticed this
and that shut them up about whatever they were complaining about. They countered
that they are a legitimate tax exempt business in real life, so they are justified
in making it happen on BL.
I had intended to report it to BL but never did. Now, I'm too lazy to find
that user ID again (tho a 40 second search of emails will prolly do it since
Montana addresses are rare on BL).

Okay, 30 seconds on BL is all it took:
https://www.bricklink.com/feedback.asp?u=BrickBrokers&fUsername=shiny_stuff
As I say, their shop is in Minnesota, but their buyer address is Montana to avoid
paying sales tax on purchases. There is only one character difference in the
two addresses (MT versus MN)
My transaction with them was 18 months ago, so the situation may have changed
since.

I answered you in an above thread. I have barely made 2 small orders in last
couple of months so that's not really the point... We are focused mostly
on selling and yes we sell mostly out of California currently. I hadn't
even looked at my personal account in all this time to notice the error.
I can't afford to move the inventory yet but its in the works (hopefully
next year). And I need to convince my brother to also move lol.

As others have mentioned, there are two places to input your address:
1. Account Information: https://www.bricklink.com/pref_general.asp
This is your "buyer" address, the one that shows up on your ID card.
2. For sellers, there is also the Store Address, shown at the bottom of the Store
Management Page: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/mystore/management.page
This is the address that buyers see at the top when they enter your store and
at the bottom of the order details page when they place an order with you.
There are entirely legally valid reasons why these addresses may be different
(separate personal/business address, etc.), but the choice of a sales tax-free
state often indicates sales tax avoidance or the use of a freight forwarder.
Delaware and Oregon are common culprits.
Or, as others have suggested, perhaps the seller is located along the Oregon/California
border, though if so they'd be one of the few.
