this is not even close to being a heated topic anywhere, but just a thought..

seemingly, lots of members have 'color' issues in regards to Lego ..
and a fitting solution would be for everyone to be able to have an in-hand Official
Lego Full Color Chart they could use as a reference instead of hoping the pixels
on their screen are correct.
a solution i had is for Lego to produce & release an Official Lego brand Crayon
Set, a Master Set, that has 1 crayon for every color of Lego Lego makes. whatever
# that might be...
i am suggesting a crayon set as it would be something easily sellable to parents
with kids at a reasonable price, but the crayon material itself would sustain
the correct color for i can only assume indefinately since i am not aware of
a phenomenon called 'Crayon Fade'...

so...

Poll:

Would you buy an Official Lego Crayon Master Set Color Chart

A) no, this is stupid
B) yes absolutely, i need one
C) maybe, a collaberation between Lego & Crayola would be interesting
D) no, but it is a good idea
E) yes, it would be nice new inventory to part-out & resell.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
being fair, let's say leave poll open for 1 week...
to give the occational forum reader a chance to participate, if they want too.
please just give a simple letter vote, no harrassing others for their vote. we
Colors often don't transfer well from one material to another. What would
sell like hotcakes would be a set of 2x4 bricks in every color.
But most of the colors Lego doesn't produce anymore. I doubt THEY would
see value in producing a color guide in colors they don't use anymore.
Or they did 11 years ago anyway.
Which is equivalent to B, D, and E.
In all seriousness, I'm not sure how much utility an official LEGO color
guide would have for your average child or adult fan of LEGO. Most people can
probably distinguish current in-production LEGO colors just fine. It's the
rare or out-of-production colors that give people the most trouble, but I don't
see the LEGO Group reviving those any time soon. The catalog community here has
put together a lot of helpful resources for distinguishing old colors and mold
variations and you can always build a color chart of your own should you feel
compelled to do so.
Besides, should the LEGO Group decide to produce an official color chart, it
would probably be better to use actual plastic bricks rather than wax crayons
in order to achieve better consistency. I used to make my own custom stickers
and they almost never looked quite right. Even official LEGO stickers are not
perfect.
Also, I don't think there's much reason to appeal to children since the
target customer is adults. Children will probably just see them as regular crayons
and use them to draw.
But, it's good to think of new ideas. 👍
I don't know about anyone else but I have trouble with dark blue and black,
of all things, even in good lighting, and dark azure and dark turquoise. I think
that's all for colors currently in production.
Of course the worst is light gray vs light bluish gray. Sometimes it's easy
but telling the difference between fresh light gray and slightly-yellowed LBG
... ugh.
Ejector pin marks usually help there.
What do you call good lighting?
Using daylight-color lighting helps.
Indeed, it also depends on how good your vision is and what kind of lighting
you use. Some may have trouble even with the current TLG color palette.
Well, perhaps that is why old light gray was retired.
As to crayons, ...
  A) no, this is stupid
What you see would depend on the colour of the paper, the lighting, how much
pressure you use to apply the crayon, and probably others. If the LEGO part colours
are hard to tell apart, the different shade you can get by varying the colouring
style won't help.
I am pretty sure the color is the crayon itself, not what you get when you color
So why make it as a crayon, and not a lego brick? I really don't see the
point of making a colour chart out of a material that is going to have different
surface properties to the parts being colour matched to it.
with it.
+1 for intelligent thought
And -10 for not making it out of ABS, the material that you will be comparing
to.
You know, you could even design some smart shapes that would allow the user to
connect and disconnect elements, so they could easily take the parts they need,
while at the same time keeping everything together and organized as is convenient
to them. Maybe some kind of stud and tube connection system would work....
There is a reason why LEGO uses 2x2 tiles for this, and why many people who are
building their own colour chart use something 2x4-brick-sized 😉
  A) no, this is stupid
What you see would depend on the colour of the paper, the lighting, how much
pressure you use to apply the crayon, and probably others. If the LEGO part colours
are hard to tell apart, the different shade you can get by varying the colouring
style won't help.
I am pretty sure the color is the crayon itself, not what you get when you color
with it.
Don't worry, I already had.
This was just part of the explanation why it is stupid (your words, given in
voting option A).
Considering that there are a lot of obscure out-of-production colours
(e.g. 176 Red Flip/Flop), it would be almost impossible for LEGO to make a full
set of crayons even if they wanted to. Additionally, Brickset has a full database
of LEGO’s colours (complete with images of parts in said colours and a list of
sets where each colour appears), so just using that as a reference when needed
is far easier and more economical for all involved!
This might be a helpful aid for people who are disabled with colour blindness.
However, the crayons, or whatever, would need to have the correct name of the
colour printed on each individual piece. This could be helpful, even if it is
not a complete set of colours, but at least covers some of the more interesting
variations.
What you have to appreciate is that Lego themselves no doubt see the colour pallete
very differently to its community. Many colours are no longer produced because
Lego consider them inferior to their more modern equivalents, hence the old browns
and greys are probably best forgotten from Legos perspective. The Bluish greys
and Reddish brown colours are now considered the future. Giving any kind of consideration
to old colours will just seem like stepping back to a place that Lego have intentionally
tried to move away from and in the end even though we might show an interest
in those old colours its unlikely that Lego will feel the same way!
Indeed, the LEGO Group does not sell retired sets or out-of-production parts.
Which ones are hardest?
Light gray and light bluish gray, brown and reddish brown, pink and light pink,
the range of purple colors that are just unfamiliar to us.
Most of the solid unrecognized colors are purples. Old Dark Pink vs. Modern Dark
Pink is definitely tough given the latter’s constant reformulation and gradual
shift toward the former’s appearance.
These two should have been split back in 2004, when the difference between the
two was most obvious. I doubt most people would be for it now.
Perhaps instead of crayons, LEGO could make gummies in all colours!
In an ideal world Lego would have incorporated a colour code system for each
colour and printed it within the parts themselves.
Better still if it was also incorporated into the Design ID it would have pretty
much removed the need for complicated Element ID's. For instance if white
was always represented by 001 and each colour code was added to the end of a
design ID that in itself would have given a unique Element I.D with the added
benefit of being able to guess it correctly just from knowing the design I.D
and Colour I.D from memory. Plus being able to read off the last 3 digits from
within the part itself would have allowed for a definitive means of identifying
the colour
But in an ideal world Lego would have also used more sensible colour names and
we wouldn't be in a situation where certain colour names like Bright Green
and Metalic Silver represent completely different colours on BL compared to Lego....
How can that even be allowed to happen?
A. I don’t see a need, especially if it was made of wax. If anything, buy some
known bricks of each color and make your own guide.
D) What I really need is a distunguishing tool for the most critic similarities
(dark red/reddish brown, old/new grays, medium orange etc.), ideally on original
lego bricks without sun burn.
If available, i use bigger parts (e. g. 2x8 brick). I also think, that crayons
may differ a bit in color due to different materials.
