Not a stupid question at all!
I have kept an eye on it off and on, but nothing has been added unfortunately

pay with paypal? label printed through paypal? If yes to both you can locate
the details in your paypal account.

Not just German. I'd say half of the orders I make from European and British
sellers say they'll include tracking but never send it.

I don't recommend it, but if you really want the tracking number, a lawyer
could sequester it for you.
You'd be very likely to get the seller responding to email and messages,
as an added bonus.
I suggest you look at the seller's feedback history, if they have a history
of shipping issues or non-compliance regarding sending tracking numbers, it should
show you in the feedback left for the seller.
That might constitute grounds for using a lawyer to retrieve information you're
entitled to, on a legal basis.
Lawyers don't do funny, they just get you the information you wanted and
should have been given in the first place.
Just my 2c worth, a proper lawyer shouldn't charge you an excessive fee for
retrieving package tracking information.

which case they won't answer hoping the package shows up. Waiting a month

It wouldn't surprise me if the German seller did not use Paypal to pay for
a postage label. Paypal and shipping companies are not that well integrated in
other countries outside the US.

Yeah that's fair. Unless other buyers mention shipping delays?
In the absence of tracking details or 'delivery attempt was made' post-cards,
you should definitely check your local mail hub once a week. A good amount (about
a fifth) of my undelivered packages are from Germany and they get sent back as
timely as possible.

| Depending on shipper/country, tracking can be an added cost. When placing the
order did you choose/ask/pay for a shipping method including tracking?
If yes; you are entitled to receive the tracking number

With one of the shipping companies I use I only get the tracking number the next
day after pickup, all the orders label get a pickup ID that gets sorted and auto-etiqueteted
depending on country carrier.
In the case of DHL, most times DHL already sends you an email with the tracking
info, so the seller saves that step with each order. I suppose you have checked
your spam folder just in case?

Ah, that explains why one seller I bought from put “You’ll receive tracking-information
directly from shipping company via email” in the Shipping field.
Problem is, I think the mails were blocked directly by my ISP because I never
got them (nope, not in the spam folder either).
Maybe because there’s a lot of scams/phishing about packages these days.
(I do receive the e-mails from DHL Express, but that was a DHL Parcel, no signature.
And it arrived in 3 days, so not an issue.)

| Could there be a language barrier perhaps? The seller may have "opened"
your message but if it was not in German, perhaps they just closed the message
and did not bother to translate it?
You could always accommodate the seller and send a query to them again in German
and English.
1 other thing, USPS has a feature called "Informed delivery." This feature
adds all tracking info for any package going to your address IF you are registered
for it. I can see all my international packages through this feature even if
the seller does not supply a tracking number.
Does Canada Post have anything like this?
