I recently started a sealed set collection as an investment. So far I have 2
large boxes filled.

Wat are your opinions?

Not that i'm changing my mind, just curious on what everybody thinks!

Collecting sealed Lego sets is contrary to the telos of Lego - which is to be
built.

Well I can resell it in the future for potentially a lot more to someone who
will build it.

Back in the day, no one saved sealed sets, thus they are now worth something.

Now everyone and his grandmother are saving sealed sets, thus making them nearly
worthless.

My 2 cents,

It can go either way. Mostly it depends on whether the set itself will be in
demand in the future. If it has a lot of common parts they might not sell for
much because they are lower priced. If it's a Limited Edition or Collectible
set, then it might increase in value over time.

What usually happens is that the market sets prices for sets, and that's
what buyers end up paying if they really want a set.

If the set is large and expensive, this is also a factor in pricing. It tends
to vary based on demand for the set.

Sometimes sellers overprice sets, and they never move, if one is selling them,
unless they get discounted. That eats up both storage space and limits how much
new set inventory one can have on hand.

If you're collecting, you likely will want to collect a particular series
or similarly themed series. If you try to collect all the series and all the
sets ever released you might need a very large warehouse or storage area!

Just my observations.

Cheers ...

It sounds like I should have just kept my 10277 Crocodile Locomotive set sealed
up in its box... but it would've been absolutely no fun for this AFOL/railfan
to just leave a train set sealed up in its box, because I just don't have
any place to display sealed-box sets.

That is why you buy two, one to build, one to keep sealed
(or more if you want)

I would have done that... if there had been more than one set available from
the seller (not on BrickLink, but on a different website), and I had the funds
to actually be able to do so. Of course, it would've been worth it at the
time, as the asking price was $100 USD when I purchased the set. By now, it's
probably going for quite a bit more than $100 USD, so for me, it's 'one
and done' when it comes to the 10277 set.

I've got plenty of straight track on hand - I bought some on BrickLink last
year in order to create a double-track railroad crossing diorama (using the 60335-1
Train Station set) that features the 10277 Crocodile Locomotive pulling three
custom-built passenger cars. Am I crazy about trains? I guess so...

I found this question thought provoking and would like to share an example of
holding a sealed set and selling it later. Of course, this all depends on how
long you're planning on keeping them before selling, but here's an example
to think about.

SW set purchased 14 years ago for $25
sold it this month (sealed) for $42

$17 profit right?

well - bricklink fee and paypal fees add up to 3.72, so the profit becomes 13.28

But what about taxes? The goverment here would treat this as capital gains and
tax it at 28% (I believe). So that's another 3.72 taken away, leaving an
actual profit of 9.56.

9.56 - for something i held on to for 14 years, keeping it in amazingly
new condition.

Would that original 25 i had 14 years ago be worth more now if i had put it in
a low cost index fund? something to consider... I mean it would have been a
lot less work/time/space

I think capital gains are at most 25% now - it depends on your income. But I'm
not sure it would apply in this case anyway (this isn't tax advice, I'm
not a tax professional).

Also this doesn't count for inflation - CPI in 2009 was 214.5, last year
it was 294.4 and I'm sure it's even higher now. 25 / (214.5/294.4) =
33.53

I think the same, it must be worth the gain and storage.

Invest, sell, invest again, sell, rinse repeat…….

Your gain at first might be less, but each time you sell, your investment goes
up.
You can buy more and sell more.

Take your $17 profit, over 14 years, let’s say in that time I bought and sold
one set a year with only $3 profit.

So 14 years times $3 = $42 profit….
(and that is with minimum profit and no long storage, less gambling on my investment
etc)

Buying sealed sets for investment does work regardless of what people have said.

Choose your selling platform. Do LOTS of research. Make sure you have lots of
space to store those sets safely.

Keep track of everything you buy, how much you paid including tax, and where
it is stored.

Don't buy just to buy, unless it is a really good deal.
When Ninjago first was released, we were skeptical if it would sell. We purchased
10

Set No: 2519 Name: Skeleton Bowling
*
2519-1 (Inv) Skeleton Bowling
325 Parts, 7 Minifigures, 2011
Sets: NINJAGO: The Golden Weapons
from a Lego store when they were on sale for $7.99. The next year,
we sold them all for $25 each. On the other side we bought 10

Set No: 8089 Name: Hoth Wampa Cave
*
8089-1 (Inv) Hoth Wampa Cave
282 Parts, 3 Minifigures, 2010
Sets: Star Wars: Star Wars Episode 4/5/6
in late
2010 when they were on sale for $29.99. It took us 12 years to sell those.

Treat it like an investment. We store all our sealed sets in plastic bins (not
transparent). This will protect them from damage, water, and pests. Cat claws
can go through cardboard as we found out much to our horror when we pulled out
our 3

Set No: 10182  Name: Café Corner {Cafe}
*
10182-1 (Inv) Café Corner {Cafe}
2044 Parts, 3 Minifigures, 2007
Sets: Creator: Creator Expert: Modular Buildings Collection
we had stored in a box on top of our plastic bins. The top set
had all these little pin prick holes all over the front of the sealed set.

We also insure all of our sealed sets and personal collection.

I hope this helps.

Friend of mine has a profit margin of 27% and a ROI of 45% selling sealed and
retired sets, so whatever they tell you, consider that first.
