| I do most of my Lego work in advance on the computer. I used to work just in
Lego Digital Designer(aka LDD) but switched a couple years ago to Stud.io because
of greater parts selection, though it took some getting used to (manipulating
the view was less intuitive in Stud.io).
I've run into a serious problem. Stud.io does not automatically assign building
steps to parts, it's completely manual control (honestly it feels like it's
the stick-shift of Lego building), and it feels like you somehow have to know
as you design a model just what step each part belongs to even if you're
working all over the place and even going back later with edits and re-designs.
LDD, however, does assign steps automatically in a logical way, which can be
seen when you put the program into instruction mode.
Here's the big problem, which I discovered last night when building a small
Voyager probe MOC. You can export a Stud.io file to another format which LDD
can read, even if it tells you some parts could not be imported (you can always
open up both applications side by side on multiple screens and fill in the gaps
as needed, provided it's not a LOT of gaps). BUT, when I did that and put
LDD into instruction mode... the display was REALLY fouled up. It would list
parts in the upper left corner, as always, but it wouldn't display HOW they
went together. There was no master display taking up the LDD window showing the
model coming together piece by piece.
This was VERY alarming. I was able to build my model mainly because it's
small - only about 120 parts - and I could move things around in Stud.io to see
the inner assemblage covered by outer layer pieces. I have MOCs planned involving
thousands of parts, including a house design that holds great sentimental value
for me (childhood home), and I can only imagine having to build it without LDD
instructions as a nightmare. Is there a solution to this problem? Is there some
setting in Stud.Io or LDD I need to tweak? Maybe export the file as a different
type? Is there (insane to ask, I know) and UPDATE to LDD that addresses this?
Hope someone can help, please. (writing this at work, so I cannot provide a screencap
at the moment of what the wonky display in LDD looks like, but I can provide
such later on request).

It's simply studio for some years.

Sincerely and IMHO about this:
* completely forget LDD (outdated software)
* build in studio using sub-models and take some time to learn how to
make instructions inside studio.
Using auto-instructions often makes you do so much corrections that it's
worse than having done it organized, by yourself.
This, apart if someone has a technical solution for you about import/export...

The controls are basically the same ( https://studiohelp.bricklink.com/hc/en-us/articles/5409213150487-Camera-control-in-the-viewport
), except for center on brick (right-click in LDD) that you need to attach to
a shortcut in Studio.
Otherwise, there’s also the F key that centers on the mouse pointer.

You want the Divide into steps feature: https://studiohelp.bricklink.com/hc/en-us/articles/7123910550039-Automatic-instructions-Divide-into-steps
It’s as good as LDD is… and that means: okay for vertical builds, crappy for
complex builds.

Browse the help pages: https://studiohelp.bricklink.com/hc/en-us , there’s a

| Also, I finally found the solution to the problem. The Studio file has to be
exported in the proper format (LXFML).

| What I've done is look into the preferences to find the shortcut codes and
get to know the ones you use the most.
You can even change or add your own shortcut code.
If I'm building something from scratch, I've assigned the Z key to add
a step.
That way every time I add a part, I can click on Z and the next part goes to
the next step.
Get used to building using sub-models.
You can also make instructions using the step editor and working "backwards".
Work from the finished MOC and when selecting parts, use move to step after.
This removes the part from the current view. Rinse and repeat until you've
reached the first step/part.
