To whomever may be reading this, I have collected legos for over fifteen years
and am ready to sell my collection. I have a large collection of unsorted and
unbuilt pieces, along with hundreds of built sets stored away properly in boxes.
I believe everything could be worth $2000-$3000. I am looking for an expert who
understand the prices of legos, and how I would go about selling everything.
If I would have to sort out pieces, take apart built sets, buy or find pieces
to complete each set? If somebody has this knowledge or knows of somebody who
could help with selling my collection I would greatly appreciate it. I would
be glad to show pictures as well if I am able to get in contact with somebody
who could help. Thank you, Keith.

Hey Keith, I would recommend to note down every set you remember you have in
your collection. make two piles. Known sets and unknown sets. Look on BrickLink
or the official lego site for additional info for parts. (in most instructions
the parts page is at the end with all the part numbers)

Try to group as many items as possible and sort everything from there.
You may message me if you need further instructions or help.

The more time you put into the selling of your collection, the more money you’ll
get for it. I’ll just throw out some rough numbers here, but the first thing
you probably want to do is get a rough idea of what you have and what it’s “worth”
if complete. The easiest way is if you have instructions for all your sets and
you know that they are more or less complete within your collection.

Use bricklink 6 month sales average to get a rough idea of the value of your
collection. No need to check every single set… if it’s a small city set for example,
it’s probably worth just a few bucks used.

Themed sets like Star Wars or lots of the rings are where the money is.

Once you’ve got a good rough estimate, decide what you want to do.

- sell the entire lot on a local marketplace and expect to get 50% of the value.
- sell each set individually on bricklink and expect to get 80-90% (will likely
take several years).
- sell individual parts and figs and expect to get about 200-300% of value (will
likely take several years and require a lot more work than selling just the sets).

Then there are hybrids of the above like selling all figures separately and then
selling the pieces in bulk.

There were loads of the rings in the LEGO sets though. I dread to think how many
of the "one ring" I have.

In the Riddles For The Ring set

Set No: 79000 Name: Riddles for The Ring
*
79000-1 (Inv) Riddles for The Ring
98 Parts, 2 Minifigures, 2012
Sets: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: The Hobbit
there were enough rings for one each.

Are you sure they were all the One Ring?  Have you tried to put them in a fire
to check?

Depending on completeness, and your ability to make assurance of that, you may
end up selling by the pound.

One good place to begin in you search for people with knowledge of Lego and how
to sell it would be your local LUG (Lego User Group). Being located in Massachusetts,
your local LUG is NELUG. They are a well-established club that has been around
for more than 20 years. If they cannot help you directly, I am sure they can
hook you up with the right person or people who can help.

Good Luck and happy sorting, building, and organizing.

PS: Once you do have your Lego organized, good PHOTOGRAPHS are very helpful
in selling Lego, both as sets and bulk mixed lots.

My guess:  First they are waiting for notifications, then they forget or try

Or they moved on….

To be fair its only been 14 hours since the OP posted, you can't honestly
expect someone to post a question on an internet forum and then constantly refresh
in the hopes someone has replied already. OP posted at 18:30 odd EST, maybe they
then went about their evening and will spend today at work before checking again
when they get home to see if anyone replied?

Not everyone has a desk job like mine, whiling away the working hours reading
Bricklink forum posts. It's my microcosm in to the latest developments in
international trade and tax.

You do need to be careful here. If you post pictures saying I have all this stuff
and I want to sell it, then it looks like you are trying to sell circumventing
paying fees.

The simple way to determine the price is type in each set number and look at
the sold prices for used sets. Another way is to auction them, grouping together
smaller sets.

Unsorted and unbuilt parts - you will probably need to sell these as used bulk
if you are not willing to sort them all.

As to an expert who understands prices... what do you want them to do, and how
are they to be paid?

- Buy the sets - they will offer you well under the value. Their pay is making
a profit selling on your sets.

- Estimate the prices you might get - that is what the price guide is. But you
will need to check every set is complete. You can do the work looking the prices
up or you can get someone else to do it. For one set, it is not much work. For
100s of sets, it is. However, checking the sets are complete is more work.

To everybody that wrote back to my letter,

I would like to thank you very much for your response. I am going to sort out
every set, manual, box, and loose piece. After I do that is where I would need
some guidance to put everything up for sale. If anybody is familiar with using
this brick link program, I believe you could be of help. I would like to try
selling everything either on here, or on craigslist as I have sold many things
using that program. If I was to sell everything on brick link, I would need to
know how to put something up for sale, and how I would sell my Lego collection.
As a complete set, by the pound, a mostly built set that is missing pieces, or
putting everything up sale all together? Also I would like to know how to find
the prices of a lego set on this program as well. If you all wouldn't mind
continuing to help I would greatly appreciate it. Other than that I thank you
all once again for writing back to my letter. Sincerely, Keith.
