A U.S. buyer has requested shipping by courier such as Fedex, or DHL. Normally,
I'd send an order like this by Canada Post small packet. From what I can
find out, it looks like Fedex is extremely more expensive. Is this right? Have
any Canadian sellers used this method of shipping?

I've used netParcel through PayPal.
They give prices for the big couriers.
I've found that UPS usually has the best prices there.
Usually cheaper than Canada Post and includes tracking.

Never used Fedex or DHL, but I usually use UPS to the US. And even their priority
service is like $20 for next day. But some of the base service is like $11
orders and quite fast (especially to the east coast). Fedex and DHL were always
incredibly expensive, even when I looked at some of their business account offerings.

I do use UPS sometimes at some rare customer's request. Since it's not
one of the shipping service I offer and I have to do a short drive to the UPS
store, I charge an extra 5$.

In my mind, yes it's expensive, mostly when they charge like 45$ of custom
fees just to process the package (from USA to Canada). That was years ago, hopefully
it changed.

The custom fees for Toys in USA is just Duties and it is only applicable for
orders of value above a high treshold, like $1200 USD but I don't remember
how much it was.

I believe USA to Canada is expensive because of UPS's brokerage fees for
clearing customs.

I had a similar request once. Asked if there was a specific reason and it was
because they wanted tracking on the package. I sent them a copy of the Canada
Post page showing the options for Canada Post tracking and they chose one of
the options and I sent them the tracking number With the Drive thru message.
Everyone was happier.

I think many US customers dont realize that there are cheaper options. Also
my Post Office recommended putting a customs tag on all my packages to the States
stating that it was toy. Had some quicker deliveries since then, at least on
small packages, larger ones still take time.

One of the many reasons I refuse to entertain the use of couriers. They are all
a ripoff. Canad Post Expedited is insured, trackable and reasonably fast. Expresspost
USA a bit faster for much more money.
