I recieved a lot from eBay this morning. The seller described it as his collection
from the 1970s.

The blue pieces all look like this. The 2×4 with the old logo is the color in
question, the 2×3 is a modern piece for comparison.

I can't tell if they're discolored from age, or a different color entirely.

The whites are all faded to Ivory or even Cream. The reds all look good. The
yellows and the light grey base brick look a bit faded, and all of the parts
are quite dirty and played with.

So, are these standard blue, and just discolored? Or are they another color
entirely? Perhaps Maersk Blue(looks too dark to me, but i have no comparison
piece).

On a side note, I'm overjoyed to have some old logo studs, and some no-cross-support
2×4s and lots of pat pending pieces!

Standard blue, but faded. Old part

Yes, old standard blue, a bit discoloured.

In the Great Colour Shift of 2003-2004, all the colours were changed because
the way they are made changed, so even a pristine old Blue isn’t quite like the
modern Blue.
Plus, there’s LEGO colour quality

But yours is just slightly yellowed.

Maersk Blue is totally different, what you could confuse it with is Medium Blue,
not Blue.

Not all colors were changed then, just some: https://www.flickr.com/photos/126975831@N07/35684361676

Some were deleted in that period, while some were newly introduced, but most
of the "perennial" colors (blue, yellow, red, green, white, black) were unchanged.

It wasn't until... I want to say 2006—2008?... that Lego started mixing their
own colors instead of receiving precolored granulate from their suppliers.

Yes, I think 2006 is the year most-often advanced for the start… for the end,
well, it’s TLG’s usual stock management.

I mixed up my dates (points in time; no rendez-vous nor fruits were harmed during
this brain fart).
Thanks for the correction

Reading the chart: 25 Brown is out, it’s replaced with 192 Reddish Brown, oh
and there’s a new colour, 217 Brown.

Yeah, way to go and confuse people TLG!

Some of the dark blue in the R2D2 set were so all over the place, that it could
have been TLG trying their hand at colorizing neutral ABS. Some were transparent
dark blue and some were translucent dark blue. If so, that would kick the date
back to ~2002.

Set No: 8009 Name: R2-D2

8009-1 (Inv) R2-D2
239 Parts, 2002
Sets: Technic: Star Wars: Star Wars Episode 4/5/6

It's very possible that set used 156 Transparent Deep Blue instead of 43
Transparent Blue. Do you have a picture of the translucent ones?

Did Lego use cadmium in blue bricks? I thought it was only used for red and yellow.

Same here, all the ones in this thread look like standard blue to me just different
amounts of fading. Some parts have been abused over time. Sat in attics or garages
for years, used as an animal toilet then sat in a strong bleach solution for
days and days to sanitise them. Or left out all summer in a sandpit in bright
sun.

Put them in the sun behind(!) the glass/window, color might come back

Same in my collection, blue pieces discolor badly - those look rather ok compared
to some things I have.
Btw., I've been wanting to ask for some time: What is still acceptable to
sell here? I'm rather reluctant to sell anything that doesn't look new
anymore, but if I stick to my standards I basically can't sell anything blue
- I list some pieces with the note "slightly discolored", but I'm not sure
what that means exactly, and I suspect the prospective buyers won't be either...

Personally, I wouldn't list anything heavily discoloured but then I rarely
sell heavily used parts as I don't buy to sell used lots. Even if I did,
selling bad parts worth very little is likely to backfire for not much profit,
so not worth it.

Those bad parts can be sold as 'filler' bricks for low price

Or kept as filler for myself, and avoid the hassle of packing orders with low
value parts.
