I recently bought set 4748, used and incomplete. I went through the pieces and
there was a mixture of light gray and light bluish gray pieces. All of these
pieces were part of the set.

Not sure if the set came this way or if pieces were added afterwards.

Does anyone know if this set was released with a mixture of both light and bluish
gray pieces?

Since that was the exact year of the transition of the grays, I would not be
at all surprised to find it with a mixture of both light grays. However, since
your set is used, it is hard to know if it was all the original pieces.

Were sets released with a mixture? If so, that's not good, would look terrible
built with a smorgasbord of grays

It happened, IIRC from back then, because the set assembly points (Enfield, et
al) had K8s of parts in one shade, and when they ran out, the factory was not
going to do a special run, so they used the new shade. As some point the molding
facilities stopped using the old grey/browns, and did a full shift to the new
shades. When the AFOL community exploded, the rep that was trying to calm things
down, talked to the production department, and they came to some agreement to
make one last run, using the old color pellets, until they ran out. They apparently
had a little inventory of the pellets for the old shades. They made an offer
to the AFOL community that was based on a limited number of packs of bricks,
until the supply was exhausted. None of this affected inventory for the sets
already in production.
