We need a solution to link these to the sets. I see you deleted all of them from
the inventories...

I agree. However, since the sets have original box entries inherently tied to
them, having packaging supplies in the inventory right now basically creates
duplicate inventory entries. Also, they are technically not part of the set,
since LEGO does not count these items in the set part counts. To LEGO, they are
packaging, and the way BrickLink handles packaging is through the original box
entries for sets. As such, sets are not required on BrickLink to have original
boxes to be considered a complete used set for sale purposes. Adding these packaging
items to the set inventories would change that dynamic completely.

Robert and I have both had recent thoughts about the way the system is currently
designed where the one instructions entry and the one original box entry inherently
tied to the sets do not allow for the variations in instructions or set boxes
to be documented for the sets. If the system would have been designed differently
from the beginning where these were actually part of the inventories only for
tracking purposes and not sale purposes, things would have been a lot different.
This would have allowed for instructions alternates and box alternates. I think
him and I would both like the system redesigned to allow this.

With respect, having one of these DOTS sets in hand now, I have not seen TLG
make mention of the handy storage trays for those tubs. Also, by that argument,
set

Set No: 5932 Name: My First LEGO Set
*
5932-1 (Inv) My First LEGO Set
227 Parts, 1 Minifigure, 2011
Sets: Creator: Basic Set
does not have a lid or that inventory should be changed for
part

Part No: 93608 Name: Brick, Modified 16 x 24 x 2 with 1 x 4 Indentations on Ends (Container Top)
*
93608 Brick, Modified 16 x 24 x 2 with 1 x 4 Indentations on Ends (Container Top)

to be removed from inventories and made gear items.

TLG mentions very specifically that the DOTS sets set includes these trays. See
also for instance the MBA series of sets which specifically also mentioned the
storage tray and those trays are included in the set inventories.

If it really is seen as part of the box, at least add an inventory note and state
that the trays are separate gear items and deemed not to be part of the set.
There should then at least also be a note for the original box entry in the catalogue
on these sets which should mention that the box consists of three items: the
carton, the tray and the lid, and that a original box listing is incomplete if
it does not include all three items (this since there is no listing policy for
what consitutes a complete original box in cases where such boxes include gear
items). Simply disconnecting these items from the set and not making it clear
that it is deemed to the actual box and not a storage tray included in the set
as mentioned by TLG, might lead to confusion.

Just so you know, I was ready to add this to the catalogue (again) because I
really did not think that it was part of the packaging or the set box which can
be thrown out. To be honest, I would have great difficulty seeing a listing for
the box to refer to the storage trays as it is currently handled.

the box to refer to the storage trays as it is currently handled.

There are way more sets in the catalog that have had packaging meant to be saved
and used as storage and they do not have the packaging in the inventories. This
includes Classic set tubs, Duplo tubs, Bionicle canisters, Creator set canisters,
Racers canisters, etc. To keep the catalog consistent with regards to these,
original box entries are to be used for the purposes of selling these. Including
these items in the set inventories leads to "double" entries of these being attached
to the sets: one group being attached to the original box entries and then another
group being attached in the inventories.

Another clue that these are all examples of "useful" packaging and nothing more
is that LEGO does not include any of these packaging items in the official part
counts for the sets or in their official inventory downloads.

Having said all that, if we were able to disconnect the original box entry from
a set, then we *could* include these in an inventory. But then you get into a
debate about whether you have to have these tubs, canisters, trays, etc. as part
of a used set to sell it as complete. This would require changing the code, and
we do not foresee that happening.

The admin team has already discussed all of this, and we stand by our decision
that these types of packaging remain relegated to the original box entries in
the current system. We can visit how to handle notes on these items or where
to describe these in catalog help pages.

Cheers,
Randy
