| In the inventory listings, there's a column called MID. And I have not been
able to find any indication of what that name means, or what the colored rectangles
that sometimes appear in that column mean. So what the smeg is it?!

I think it stands for Match ID. The number and color correspond to different
but similar parts found in a set (that is, parts that are slightly different,
but function in the same way, like the tap with and without a hole - parts 4599a
and 4599b, respectively). If a set inventory shows these colored squares, scroll
down to the bottom of the inventory there will be an 'alternate items'
section that shows possible variants of those parts that might have been used
to make the set.
Hope this helps,
Steve
