It has been some time that we noticed the part
came with sets 7730, 7740 (released in 1980) and 7725 (released in 1981). This
cable were seen in various boxed sets (in sealed, MISB, or excellent used condition).
We had three questions to ask:
1) What is the length of this wire?
2) Did it come in all releases or it was extra or it came only for some period?
In other words, did this wire came in all releases of 7730 from 1980-82? (for
7740, between 1980-84 and for 7725 between 1981-84)
3) The owners of this set need the transformer
This transformer came with the same wire . So why did TLG include another
one in the boxes of these sets? Just as an extra?
We think we found the answer to these questions and we think that the last question
is the most important one.
First I give the answers we have for these three questions and then on separate
messages, I will upload photos as evidence.
1) The length is about 70cm (without the 1-prong connectors, with these connectors
would be about 76cm) so it is really 765c96.
On the other hand, this wire had the length 76cm. So TLG had included the same
wire with the same length as the purpose of the two was to connect the transformer
to conducting rails.
2) This wire together with tracks are the most likely parts to be removed or
intermingled with other parts or lots. However, we have seen them in MISB or
new condition sets from various years confirming that this part was not an extra
for certain releases.
3) This is the most important question and the answer would give the best support
to add this part to the inventory of these three sets.
In 70s, TLG released 12v trains but with blue tracks. They were released in some
European countires and not all. Their production stopped in 1980 and so, the
gray era began. For blue era, the transformers were
[p=741-1]
[p=742-1]
They did not come with any wire. Instead, they released supplemental sets
[p= 706-1]
or
[p= 706-2]
which came with

First these parts were blue and not nice with gray tracks. Second, these supplemental
sets were not released anymore since 1980. So TLG added the wire 765c96 to owners
of 12v blue era in order that they could still be able to run the sets 7730,
7740 and 7725 with their older blue transformer (740, 741 or 742). In these way,
they would not need to buy a new transformer.
I have also seen some lots on Ebay in which the transformer is not Lego, probably
came from other train toys. So the contact holes of transformers 740, 741, 742
or 7864 is compatible with other transformers. See photos attached

| 1) The first four photos come from a MISB set from the store Bluxe.
- The motor is of type 2 (bb12vb with integrated pin) so it was made between
1981-2
- The green trays have square corners. This is the second type and were produced
since late 1980.
On the fourth photo, we can clearly see the wire 765c96.
Unfortunately, we cannot see the 3 yellow cones in this photo. I believe they
should have axle hole.
2) The photos 5-8 come from a set 7730 in near new condition. The sealed bags
are still in the box, so are the extra parts. We can see
- the green trays have square corners so were made since late 1980.
- the Conducting Rail Curved have contact holes are
which were first released in 1981.
- the steam Steam Engine Cylinder are the later version made since mid 1981.
- the interference-free conducting rail
is included. This was released some time AFTER mid 1981.
Conclusion: all the parts are correct based on the time they were released and
shows that this set was released sometime after mid 1981.
We can clearly see the wire 765c96.
