It has been some time that we noticed the part
came with sets 7730, 7740 (released in 1980) and 7725 (released in 1981). This
cable were seen in various boxed sets (in sealed, MISB, or excellent used condition).
We had three questions to ask:
1) What is the length of this wire?
2) Did it come in all releases or it was extra or it came only for some period?
In other words, did this wire came in all releases of 7730 from 1980-82? (for
7740, between 1980-84 and for 7725 between 1981-84)
3) The owners of this set need the transformer
This transformer came with the same wire . So why did TLG include another
one in the boxes of these sets? Just as an extra?
We think we found the answer to these questions and we think that the last question
is the most important one.
First I give the answers we have for these three questions and then on separate
messages, I will upload photos as evidence.
1) The length is about 70cm (without the 1-prong connectors, with these connectors
would be about 76cm) so it is really 765c96.
On the other hand, this wire had the length 76cm. So TLG had included the same
wire with the same length as the purpose of the two was to connect the transformer
to conducting rails.
2) This wire together with tracks are the most likely parts to be removed or
intermingled with other parts or lots. However, we have seen them in MISB or
new condition sets from various years confirming that this part was not an extra
for certain releases.
3) This is the most important question and the answer would give the best support
to add this part to the inventory of these three sets.
In 70s, TLG released 12v trains but with blue tracks. They were released in some
European countires and not all. Their production stopped in 1980 and so, the
gray era began. For blue era, the transformers were
[p=741-1]
[p=742-1]
They did not come with any wire. Instead, they released supplemental sets
[p= 706-1]
or
[p= 706-2]
which came with
or
First these parts were blue and not nice with gray tracks. Second, these supplemental
sets were not released anymore since 1980. So TLG added the wire 765c96 to owners
of 12v blue era in order that they could still be able to run the sets 7730,
7740 and 7725 with their older blue transformer (740, 741 or 742). In these way,
they would not need to buy a new transformer.
I have also seen some lots on Ebay in which the transformer is not Lego, probably
came from other train toys. So the contact holes of transformers 740, 741, 742
or 7864 is compatible with other transformers.
Since tracks and conducting rails are listed as regular (despiste the fact that
they are not included in the instructions), I think this wire should be listed
as regular for the same reason.
See photos attached from various lots including trains or sets from blue era
and gray era.

| The first evidence of 7740 is taken from Bluxe. The set is in MISB condition.
The motor is of type 2 and its production date is 22 81 so made in 22nd week
in 1981. Also
- The conducting curved rails have holes
This part came first since (see the following link in which they discuss this
https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=196663
)
- The sleepers are
which were released in 1980-82 and maybe in early 1983, those that were left
over were used.
- the green trays have square corner versus rounded corners. This version were
used since very late 1980.
Conclusion. I trust the motor belongs to this set and so, the set was produced
on 22nd week in 1981.
We can see on the 6th photo that there are eleven 1-prong connectors. This set
already comes with two
which are of length 22cm. So in total they have eight 1-prong connectors. The
other three belongs to the middle wrapped wire in the photo (we don't see
one 1-prong connector) Since the middle wire is wrapped, it has longer. By comparison
with photos of
we can be sure that it is this one. Indeed, all the wires with four 1-prong connectors
are 765c14, 765c15, 765c28 and 765c96.
2) Morris (Id: Lego.12vtrains) has 7740 from his childhood which comes with this
wire. His set is from 1984. He may confirm this later.

| The other 7740 is one in used condition for sale on Ebay but I am sure the parts
belonged to the set and were not swamped. Its owner kept it in its original condition.
I asked the seller some questions and she asnwered them:
- The production date of the motor is 12802 means 12th week in 1980 on Tuesday.
It is of type 1 (bb12va)
- The green trays have rounded corners so are the early version produced only
in 1980 (until late 1980).
- The catalog is from 1980
- The sleepers are the early version since they don't have groove
.
- The curved conducting rails don't have contact holes. This is the version
made only in 1980.
- On the fourth photo, we can see the wire 765c96 on the left side of the box.
The seller gave me its length: 76cm
So this set is one of the earliest release of 7740 and came with this wire
One seller (New (and Used) Old) on bricklink sold a copy of 7740 recently. He
said the its previous owner kept the train (and 7725) in its original condition.
I asked him about the wire and he confirmed that there was an extra buyer in
the box.
This is why I believe the wire was included in all releases.

| Hello,
I support SezaR point of view and confirm that cable 765c96 is included in my
copy of 7740 that I've owned since my childhood (1984); I also add that I've
never had transformer 7864, I used a custom transformer made by my father's
friend and connected it to the track using that wire.

| Special thanks to your father and his father. Your dad's friend excellent
creativity in 1984 was a big asset to improve the inventory of 12v trains today!
