A policy/semantics question about such linked sets.

6762-1 and 6769-1 are linked by a “This Item is similar to, but has a different
number than the following Item(s)” link.
However, as randyf made a separate request for each of them, it appears the inventories
can be changed independently, and can then make the link lie.
It’s a bit troubling.
Or maybe I’m reading “similar to” too strongly: the “but has a different number”
seems to imply it’s the only difference.

I think the word "similar" is the cause of your confusion. If the relationship
between the two items stated "identical to, but have different item numbers"
then you would have a valid concern about the fact that inventories can be changed
for each set without affecting the other set. However, when identical items
have different item numbers they have one catalog entry with an alternate item
number.

Here's the full definition of similar sets with different item numbers:

Differences should include different LEGO package identification numbers,
and may include packaging materials, package graphics, some parts or aspects
of parts. These things are frequently related to geographic area and time of
release.
Matches may include sets with the same LEGO number, but which are distinguished
by different BrickLink suffix numbers, only in cases of three or more set versions,
when some have the same LEGO number and some do not.

There are also similar sets with the same item number. The description of that
relationship match:

These are almost identical sets which may differ on type of packaging, a gear
item included in one of the versions, or substantively different stickers. Similar
sets with the same number should exhibit distinguishing features on the exterior
of the box. An entry with the same number but with a different sequential number
is created in these cases.

*Facepalm* Of course, one entry and an alternate item number for identical sets,
and similar just means similar. Sorry for the brain fart.
