I have looked at every available instruction showing bicycles, and it seems that
2009 was the first year where they are shown being assembled, in these 2 sets:
Before then, it appears bicycles always came completely assembled, and this is
not surprising seeing as Lego has gradually been moving from completely assembled
items to separate items, e.g. the turntable:
My question here is whether it was at this point that Lego started in with the
1-piece wheels. This would require moving back the timeline 2 years, which is
not unreasonable, given our caution assigning this new part earlier this year.
This would involve 4 regular sets, viz the 2 aforementioned sets and these:
Anybody have any other thoughts on this, or sealed set information on any set
with a bicycle?

The single-part wheel had Design ID 92851.
first appeared in 2010.
first appeared in 2010.
Therefore, I think it is safe to say that the single-part wheel first appeared
in 2010. I would put the transition period around 2010-2011 then. 2009 would
be too early for the part to have appeared for
Cheers,
Randy

I own both set 7498 and 8404 and can confirm that both have bicycles with 2-piece
wheels. I bought and built these sets years ago, so I don't remember if the
bicycles came assembled.

Thanks for the info, guys. We'll separate the ones from 2009 on and keep
the versions as they are.
