Hi

you need to change also the MID from the regular part in '2'.
and also the MID for your alternate part will be '2' and not '374028'.

This extra is the source of the third black 3839b used in set 1593 which was
made from this set and set 6880. So if it's a b variant in 1593, it seems
to follow that it would be here. I selected alternate as both versions were still
around at this time.

I'm having real doubts about the variants in 1593, and I also don't like
"filling in" varaints during a changover period just because they were likely
there.

Anyhow, I need to get a whole picture of these three sets in my head before making
any more changes. Part of the problem is the BL concept of "extra". If both sets
combined are supposed to form another set, how can any of the pieces involved
be considered optional?

I am going to reject this change based on the following:

1) I am not convinced the 1593 inventory (even with all the extras) is a reliable
source. It looks to me more like a cut and paste job than a literal account of
set contents.

2) According to the note on the 6929 inventory, the "extra" this would be an
alternate for never actually appeared in set contents. I have my doubts about
that note, but until that is dealt with, it would cause confusion to have a variant
for a part that never existed.

3) I would need to see more evidence that the combination of the two sets was
*exactly* what was found in 1593. Some folks take this as a fact, but I've
not heard from someone who actually owned a 1593 that this was the case.

I'm still open to getting these inventories sorted out if more information
is provided.

I know this thread is several months old, but just wanted to confirm that the
extra parts are included in the set. I also think that some changes should be
made to the extras or regular parts depending on how you want to define which
parts should be extra.

The front page of the instructions (and the same image on the front of the box)
show the following 6 items in front of the open container (the first 2 are also
shown in step 14 of the instructions):
black 4006
black 3962a
black 3959
dark gray 3837
light gray 3835
trans-red 3062b

The side of the box shows all of the above items in front of the container and
in addition the following 2 items are also shown:
black 3900
trans-green 3062b

I can confirm that all of these items were included in the set from sealed set
contents. I've also included scans of the aforementioned images on the front
and side of the box and an additional image from the back of the box that shows
some of the above items assembled in some sort of device.

As mentioned above, only the black 4006 and 3962a are shown in one of the steps
of the instructions so those two should without doubt be regular items. The status
of the other items depends on whether or not items should be considered regular
if they are included in the set but are only shown on the front image of the
instructions or even only on the box.

I just realized that I made a mistake on my last past. The side of the box shows

I'll submit inventory change requests for this set after an inventory admin
replies to this post to let me know which of these items should be regular and
which should be extra. I also haven't had time to check the complete inventory
of the set. I'll also do that before I submit any change request.

This also means that the note for the set inventory should be removed or maybe
changed to reflect that these parts are found in the set but some are only pictured
in the box art or the front page cover image of the instructions.

Thanks for looking into this in more depth. This is exactly what we need - an
excellent source and a careful submitter.

I have removed the inventory note after studying your images, the change log,
and making a small chart of the affected pieces (see below). It is clear to me
that if indeed parts were being relegated to the Extras section as a matter of
principle, all 7 of them should have been moved. But only 2 were moved, and as
such it doesn't really seem as though the change was based on a complete
study of the issue.

Besides, on BL we don't include parts anywhere in our inventories if they
did not actually appear in a set. The only time that would happen is if an inventory
was done from instructions alone and we simply didn't know which parts were
present. But of course, now we do know.

In keeping with the way the inventory mostly is already, and because of the unusual
relationship with set 1593-1:

Set No: 1593 Name: Super Model
*
1593-1 (Inv) Super Model
303 Parts, 2 Minifigures, 1983
Sets: Space: Classic Space
...and because I believe Lego's general practice has been to include all
pieces necessary to build anything pictured on the box, I would like all of the
parts in question to be included as Regular.

And, yes, please do check the entire inventory for errors. I'm sure you'll
find something. I'll add an appropriate note if necessary when your change
requests are approved.

After going through the entire contents of the set I found the following issues
with the inventory in addition to those already discussed: I found a light gray
3839b instead of 3839a. The one in black was 3839a, which makes it likely that
both variants were present in this set in both colors, but please let me know
if you want me to add the light gray 3839b as alternate or change the 3839a to
3839b.

Also, in addition to the expected extra 1x1 plates the set also had a second
dark gray shovel. This is not a part that normally comes as an extra, so I am
hesitant to add this as an extra unless other people can confirm that this part
was also included as an extra in their set.

For the 4x4x2 cone, I can confirm that my set has the old variant without the
axle hole. But based on the year of release the presence of the alternate with
axle hole is probably correct.

Finally, I found a new variant of part 4032 (plate round 2x2 with axle hole).
Normally only to top half of the hole is axle-shaped while the bottom half of
the hole is completely round so that it can be placed on top of a stud. The variant
that I found has a hole that is axle-shaped all the way through which means that
you can't center it on top of a 1x1 brick.

Interesting finds! Comments below:

if you want me to add the light gray 3839b as alternate or change the 3839a to
3839b.

Let's go with a clean change on the Light Gray one (i.e. switch from 'a'
to 'b'. There is very little evidence for the use of this early version,
and nothing at all after 1981. So we are right on the line.

The Black one can stay as is. It probably changed to b at some point, but I'd
rather not add it until someone finds it.

Also, in addition to the expected extra 1x1 plates the set also had a second
dark gray shovel. This is not a part that normally comes as an extra, so I am

I would include it as an extra. It adds legitimacy to the shovel in the inventory.

For the 4x4x2 cone, I can confirm that my set has the old variant without the
axle hole. But based on the year of release the presence of the alternate with
axle hole is probably correct.

Right. This set was in the market from 1981 to 1984, so I have no reason to doubt
the variant with hole.

Perhaps you could submit a second large image to the catalog. Or maybe it will
be given its own entry. If so we'll add it as an alternate to this set.

Thanks for your work on this. I look forward to seeing the change requests.

I have submitted the change requests based on this discussion. I think I got
them all, but please let me know if I overlooked something. With regard to the
4032 variant, I had already submitted it to the catalog as 4032c. It is a functional
difference because you can't center this variant on a stud unlike the newer
more common variant.

Everything looks good - changes approved.

Btw, I forgot to ask this - did a catalog come with this set?

I'm not quite convinced that the mold difference on the round plate was intended
by Lego.
If you look at the mold numbers of your submitted plate (01-3), it seems that
it was from the very first mold (the round plate was launched in 1980 sets).

I found several of these (somehow defective looking) plates in my personal collection
and all have also mold number 01, and mold place numbers 2,3,6,8 or 9.
I also found the 'normal' round plates which fit on a stud, with the
same mold number 01 and the same mold place numbers 2,3,6,8 or 9.

To me it seems that the first batch was mismolded, either because the mold was
bad, or more likely, because the counterpart of the mold which goes into the
underside of the tube was not correctly fixed in the mold. The latter would explain
why correctly molded parts do exist with same mold and place numbers.
