| The site doubles its membership every three years for a decade and the new owner
is going to redesign the site from scratch. That does not seem very logical.
Here is the quote....
"At the end the roundtables, Jay Kim laid out his vision for BrickLink 2.0. This
will be a completely redesigned site, built from scratch, with a modern and easy
to use interface."
I wish they would only make minor adjustments/improvements as needed. I enjoy
this site. It is easy to use. I hope they do not ruin it.

| Agreed.
The back end needs to be more stable, and minor improvements are needed to the
front end. That's all.
I worry that some of the "improvements" will relate to extra ways of generating
income off the traffic here.

I think I have been hearing about Bricklink 2.0 since Moses' Ten Commandments
1.0. Or for sure since Windows 3.1.

As I understand, the foundations for this site are very old, and in order to
be up to date with current standards, they would need to do a complete redesign.
Biggest thing that bugs me, is that invoicing and payment is all manual. I wish
checkout was similar to ebay, where payment is updated automatically, along with
shipping and other details.

it needs a complete redesign. number of members doesn't matter if old none
active memberships aren't removed. that number is bound to keep increasing
independent how active the site is. how many of those are people who dropped
in once and never again? or how many of those is people who put in one order
forgot their login to the next time and then just made another?
But I also hope they don't ruin it. However it will require some get used
to. you will probably hate it the first few times, because it's new and you
have to learn where to find stuff again.

Late to the show due to the fact that life happens, but I'm going to respectfully
disagree with the idea that the redesign isn't logical.
Look at what has happened to BrickLink in the past few years. The traffic has
increased, but the site has been hacked, the regulars have been increasingly
adamant that they were growing tired of the glitches and false starts on improvements,
and everyone seems to have an opinion about changes or features that they want
to see added or restored to the site.
If I understand correctly, Jay is an AFOL and he wants to see BL succeed. What
can he do to make that happen?
First, he can look at what is working and allow that to continue while replacing
that which does not work well. I can assume safely that there is an upgrade path
possible to take the existing catalog, feedback, wanted list records, etc. from
the current SQL database. The development team will doubtless perform multiple
trial imports to be sure they have mapped the old data correctly into the new
system, and they won't roll out the new site until they are confident that
they have a near-perfect migration path in place. As an IT pro, I can say that
there will be some migration pains, and the developers will have to spend some
time working with the users to correct the small stuff, but if they are worth
their salt, they will work diligently to ensure that small stuff is all they
have to correct after the go-live date. No one wants to repair big stuff after
a rollout.
From the usability perspective, I am sure that Nexon will be adding alternate
payment methods, better invoicing, and many of the things that we would all like
to see. BL is a terrific resource, but it is dated in appearance and, as noted
frequently, new visitors are often hesitant to buy because the site doesn't
look professional enough or it's too confusing for them. If it looks
like a modern commercial site, it may generate increased revenue for all sellers.
I haven't been here long, but I am buying regularly and am in the process
of standing up my storefront as well. I'm optimistic that what Jay wants
to do is improve it for the AFOL community, not tear down what has worked in
favor of wholesale change.
