Useful, yes!
Where would it be so instinctively people could find it?

It could have a help page, people might not instinctively find it but those in
the now could paste it into a help thread to answer some questions.
I vote yes.

Ps Just getting into the trains myself so would love to have this available and
when I learn more would be glad to help.

This a good idea. I currently use the one on Eurobricks but it's kind of awkward
the way it's set up.

I was thinking of making a PDF of how to use BrickLink and some tips (like how
to part out something onto your wanted list -- some people don't notice that
"(Part Out)" link on the catalog entry).
Here are some of my favorite links:
http://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=168 (Catalog Naming Conventions, just
in case you wanted to know how the parts and sets are named)
http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=569985 (Check your inventory to see if
you have parts of a certain set -- Thank you, therobo)
http://www.bricklink.com/catalogPG.asp (Price guide -- The one on the right
can be used to get the part out value for a set -- Forgot who showed me this,
but THANK YOU to whoever did, this is a valuable tool for sellers)
http://www.bricklink.com/wantedShop.asp (Because some people don't know what
to do after they've made a wanted list)

I'm all for it and would be happy to contribute. I work with both 9V and PF.

Sounds like a solid idea and a useful resource!
Does the Toy Story train fit standard PF Track?
Why do TLG not produce crossovers or equal arm points (switches) in PF track
yet?
Why is there such a shortage of straight track, at a reasonable price?

Yes.
|

I don't know why they haven't done crossovers, though I suspect poor sales in
the 9v crossovers might have something to do with it. Perhaps I am misunderstanding,
but LEGO already makes switches in PF track, I own several sets.
|
Why is there such a shortage of straight track, at a reasonable price?
|
Because LEGO wants to sell its flex track, so it made straight track harder to
get. Couple that with most people want straight track more than curved track,
and so very few people actually wanting flex track at all, and you get high demand
for a hard to obtain product.

They did:
The real question is why they retired it.
| Why is there such a shortage of straight track, at a reasonable price?
|
That raises another good question: Where does LEGO train track come from?
Most LEGO train sets come with a complete circle (16 pieces) of curved track.
Many also come with straight track as well, but usually only 4 or 8 pieces.
So, there may simply be a shortage of straight track compared to curved track,
increasing the price of straight track relative to curved track.
In fact, some train sets even come with no straight track at all, just a circle:
Although the set above does include 16 pieces of flex track, which is equivalent
to 4 pieces of regular track (straight or curved).
However, the LEGO Group does seem to be aware of this gap in supply. The set
above was released in 2010. In 2015, they released
Which includes 12 pieces of straight track. Prior to that release, no set had
ever included more than 8 pieces of straight track. And in 2018, they released
Which includes 16 pieces of straight track and 16 pieces of curved track. Same
with
Which was released in 2022.
So, it appears that the LEGO Group has been including more straight track in
their recent train sets.
The LEGO Group also makes sets that just consist of track, but they typically
include a mixture of different track types:
Train stations and other supplemental sets sometimes include a few pieces of
straight track:
And there is a set that consists of 8 pieces of metal (9V) straight track:
But there are no sets that just consist of plastic (RC/PF) straight track.
