Hi, can anybody help me find large baseplates (ie 32 x 32) that are thick and
can be built on from the bottom as well as the top? All the new plates are thin
and top build only.

You can use those, assembled with Technic Pins:

Part No: 65803  Name: Technic, Brick 16 x 16 x 1 1/3 with Holes
*
65803 Technic, Brick 16 x 16 x 1 1/3 with Holes
Parts: Technic, Brick {Black}

Part No: 2780 Name: Technic, Pin with Short Friction Ridges
*
2780 Technic, Pin with Short Friction Ridges
Parts: Technic, Pin {Black}

It's what's used for mosaics.

Hi and welcome

Such plates don’t exist and never existed.

First, plates that can be connected on their bottom aren’t called baseplates
but plates.
And the largest plate is 16x16:

Part No: 91405  Name: Plate 16 x 16
*
91405 Plate 16 x 16
Parts: Plate

There have been large bricks that served as bases, but they are old and discontinued
(and some couldn’t connect on all their bottom):

Part No: 700 Name: Brick 10 x 20 (Undetermined Type)
*
700 Brick 10 x 20 (Undetermined Type)
Parts: Brick
Marked for Deletion

Part No: 30072  Name: Brick 12 x 24
*
30072 Brick 12 x 24
Parts: Brick

Hello!
You can actually build on top of and below this 'lid'. It is thick (about
2.5 cm) and comes as the top of this IKEA box.

I actually bought one on "feeBay" thinking it WAS an old baseplate but
I'm pretty sure it is this box lid.

HTH,

LM
