I do not have any of this style older tree

Part No: FTPineH Name: Plant, Tree Flat Pine Painted with Hollow Base
*
FTPineH Plant, Tree Flat Pine Painted with Hollow Base
Parts: Plant, Tree
but since the description says "hollow base," I was wondering if it can
be placed on 2X2 studs like

Part No: 3471  Name: Plant, Tree Pine Large 4 x 4 x 6 2/3
*
3471 Plant, Tree Pine Large 4 x 4 x 6 2/3
Parts: Plant, Tree
I'm guessing that any of the old trees that have "hollow base" in
their descriptions would either work or not work the same as the example I mentioned.
If the older style base does go onto 2X2 studs, is it meant to, or does it have
a too-loose or too-tight connection?

Looking at set images for sets containing this old tree I see that they are placed
on baseplates covering a 2x2 studs area so it seems that their bases are indeed
the same size as 3471.

That makes perfect sense. Thanks!

I don’t have this one in particular but it’s LEGO, so I would say yes, they are
supposed to fit.

I have “granulated” ones (below), the have a tube (or struts for the bush), and
they fit… more or less tightly.
But then, it’s not the same plastic as modern parts and 3471 can also be capricious…

Ah, okay, so those that don’t have a “hollow base” have a full/flat base that
can’t connect.

I used to have these "2 dimensional" trees back in the late 1960s. As
far as I can remember, yes, they did fit on 2x2 studs. I also remember they tended
to be quite fragile and easily broke off the base.
