Inventory changes based on a (1980) catalog photo. Looking back at the instructions I also could not find which model would require a fifth

Check the models on the back or inside the boxwhere you will probably find these
parts. This set probably came with more parts that there are currecntly listed,
not less!

Thanks, that is probably where the part count came from. Box art and catalog
photos both are prepared in preproduction, so in terms of reliability I'd
argue they are equivalent. Did you notice though that the wire in my photo looks
white, so maybe that is a hint it is an earlier version?

I overlooked that you mentioned you took this photo from the catalog.
Yes, the photo was taken before the release of the set in 1980 and the white
wire was discontinued in later79-early80. The catalog images are almost always
taken just before the release of the set, except those cases when they updated
a catalog image with a new one (like 7860, 7865,... sold between 1980-94)
I think you are right about these changes. I did not find more than 4 round 2x2
light gray bricks. The issue is that there is a part count on the american box,
and another part count for the Canadian box (produced by the samsonite of Canada):
Part count on the American box: 591

If your change requests are correct, we will have 539 parts, including those
two paper informations that we don't know whether TLG and Samsonite considered
as part.
I have additional changes to propose for this set, which will include at least
three components: two alternate wire-connector assemblies and an alternate information
paper, all of which should be listed as alternates. I had already submitted a
change request for this set, but it was immediately rejected by the catalog-inventory
admin, TakeAbricK, without proper consideration and based on what I believe was
an unfounded excuse.
Over the years, I have contributed significantly to the forum, uploading thousands
of photos one by one to support over 2,000 accepted inventory changes. In fact,
I believe I have uploaded more photos for inventory changes than any other contributor
on the platform.
Despite this, I’ve noticed a recurring pattern: rather than focusing on improving
catalog accuracy, TakeAbricK seems more inclined to reject my submissions whenever
a justification can be found. Her common response is: "We can't accept
change requests like this, without solid proof," which she appears to use
as a blanket reason for dismissals:
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1495646
In this particular case, her reason for rejecting the request was incorrect,
as there was no duplicate submission. I had never submitted another identical
request:
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1495647
In light of these issues, I hope future inventory changes will be evaluated more
fairly and consistently, especially when supported by proper documentation and
community contribution.

I believe you missed that my suggestion was to subtract one part, and add two
additional parts (the yellow ones), so in fact the new total would come out to
be 543 parts. Unfortunately due to the low fidelity of the photo I could only
make out the larger parts accurately. Most of what I could see matched what
was already listed on BrickLink, so if there are missing pieces it's likely
related to the smaller parts.
How much confidence can be placed in the official part counts on boxes? I've
notice that larger sets have a lot variance between what LEGO lists versus the
BrickLink inventories. Can't say I've ever tried to pin down why there
are such discrepancies. Also, could the difference in part count between the
boxes be related to if hinges or other parts came assembled or not? Wasn't
that sometimes a difference between American and Canadian sets.

True, I momentarily forgot that you requested to add one to the quantity of those
two bricks, not remove one. But that doesn't change my point. Based on your
inventory change request, the piece count would be 543 and then, based on my
finding, it would be 546. We are still far away from 571 and 592.

The inventory of universal sets are not reliable at all. I think the inventory
of set 722-1 is reliable, verified with sealed copies, but for example, I have
a new yet incomplete 733 and this is my finding
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1455929
The piece count on the American box: 493
The piece count on the American box: 509
The piece count of BL's inventory: 499
The piece count of BL's inventory if they process and accept my request (submitted
on Feb 2024): 503
Unfortunately my set is incomplete because two bags were previously opened (and
their bags were removed) and a few parts from those bags are missing.
There is not piece count for the set 599 but I recently checked and verified
its inventory with a new copy and I can tell I have to submit over 80 changes,
increasing a few tens of parts to its inventory, including one minifig!
Also, could the difference in part count between the boxes be related to if hinges or other parts came assembled or not?
NO, if there is any difference between the way they counted parts is in extra
paper information or sticker sheet. (and maxifigures but that's not relevant
here)
Wasn't that sometimes a difference between American and Canadian sets.
Perhaps there are differences in basic and universal sets, but not in space/town/technic
sets.
