Hi,
I am wondering, are orders that are placed by buyers binding for sellers or can
they always withdraw?

E. g. seller makes a price mistake or seller got a higher bid from outside bricklink
or decides to sell to someone else etc.

If I place an order, does this make a contract that the seller has to fulfill?

There are BrickLink 'rules' in place but they are not enforceable.

  E. g. seller makes a price mistake or seller got a higher bid from outside bricklink
or decides to sell to someone else etc.

They are not supposed to but it does happen.

Research the sellers you choose to buy from. Check their terms and their feedback
carefully. There are always bad apples in any open marketplace. And inexperienced
sellers can understandably make mistakes. It's a very complicated system.
But I would say the majority of sellers here worth the extra effort.

If I place an order, does this make a contract that the seller has to fulfill?

No, but if a seller cancels an order, you still may leave negative feedback on
the transaction. However, that leaves you open to retaliatory feedback.

This a buyer beware kind of market. But there is lots you can do to avoid the
pitfalls.

Good luck!

There are BrickLink 'rules' in place but they are not enforceable.

They are in fact, enforceable, as being spelled-out within the User ToS agreement
here, specifically for enforcement... Rules may not be known to be enforced here,
but are "enforceable" nonetheless.

"If there is a dispute between a Buyer or Seller regarding whether an
order should be cancelled, we reserve the right (but do not have an obligation)
to resolve the dispute.

And if you meant by "not enforceable" that BL is unable to compel selling
members to fulfill contracts? Well then yes, you're right. But then again,
neither can any other instrument of coercion, not really
