Source is a boxed, used set. Set came with matching period correct part molds, so I believe the slopes are original.

Here is a photo from a sealed copy for further confirmation. Considering this
version would presumably have had a limited production span what evidence is
there that it even came with regular 3040 slopes? Maybe it would be more appropriate
to just list the hollow slopes.

I think you can safely remove bricks 3040.
I did a search on the US catalog. The large one in 1980:
https://picclick.com/LEGO-1980-Catalogue-VGC-316351034040.html

There is no 493 which is also a little bit strange. Was this set sold for only
one year?
In any case, it seems the set 6970-1 from 1981 was a replacement for this set.
I know that the slopes 45 2x1 were first produced in 1981 (while TLG still had
leftover 3040a and used what they had in new sets produced in early 1981)

Where did you find this photo?
I wonder whether the minifigs are stickered. Perhaps, some early copies of some/all
space sets sold in the US came with stickered minifigs.

I think you can cancel this request and submit a new one to remove 3040s.

I took some time to look into this. 493-1 first shows up for sale November 1978.
493-3 then of course appears in 1979 US catalogs, but like you say even by late
1979 set 493 seems to disappear from ads and is replaced by either set 483-1
or 6970-1. Though I did spot a 926-1 lurking in the background of a 1981 Danish
advert, so maybe it had a longer shelf life in Europe?

To answer your other question: it was printed torsos that came with the sealed
copy. I don't think I've seen stickers come in an American set. That
fits though since wasn't that something exclusive to the Wrexham LEGO factory.
