Recently I was going through my LEGO sets and I noticed a strange discrepancy
between set 3440 (NBA Jam Session Co-Pack)'s listed parts and the parts I
was given. In both the part listing and the instruction manual, the set is supposed
to come with one blue basketball and one red basketball. However, the version
of the set I have came with two orange basketballs with black lines. As far as
I remember we never had the red/blue basketballs, and the only other basketball
related set we own is set 3560 (NBA collectors #1) which doesn't come with
any basketballs. Could the orange basketball w/lines be considered an alternate
part, or is it just a factory mistake?

Balls that were supposed to come with set:

Part No: 43702 Name: Ball, Sports Basketball Plain
*
43702 Ball, Sports Basketball Plain
Parts: Ball {Red}

Part No: 43702 Name: Ball, Sports Basketball Plain
*
43702 Ball, Sports Basketball Plain
Parts: Ball {Blue}

Ball type that came with my set x2:

Part No: 43702pb02 Name: Ball, Sports Basketball with Standard Black Lines Pattern
*
43702pb02 Ball, Sports Basketball with Standard Black Lines Pattern
Parts: Ball {Orange}

Good question, I don't remember exactly when we bought it but if I remember
correctly it was a Christmas present for my dad so we would have opened it around
late December 2003 and probably purchased it around Black Friday 2003 or something
like that. So kinda near the end of when it was probably sold.

To be honest, I'm kinda leaning toward it being a mistake because the instruction
manual that came with the set still shows the red and blue balls, but it's
a pretty big mistake to make imo so that's why I'm not 100% sure.

We'd rather not add an alternate at this point. It is highly unlikely that
LEGO's intent was to include only two orange balls in the set. First of all
because the set is supposed to have 4 balls (2 red and 2 blue) and because the
color design of the set is "Red vs. Blue". Also, LEGOs own data confirms
the 2 blue and 2 red balls.
