I wonder what you think of this. I bought 40 packs of sealed D&D figures from
a seller. I was surprised to find that none of them were the Dragonborn Paladin.
I contacted the seller to say that is statistically improbable. He told me
he had removed the paladins from the lot and were selling them individually as
the palladin.

I made my case that I didn't think it was right to do that without making
a note in the description that these random figures would not include the palladin.

The official description of this item is one random figure out of 12, not out
of 11.

The seller agreed to give me a partial refund, but didn't think there was
any issue.

It's not random if cherry picked; this is bad.

Uh yeah about a 3% chance

Even if the seller hadn't removed them but had bought the boxes from a store,
chances are they would have all been removed anyway but by someone else. With
the easy to scan qr codes, none of the boxes for sale are random.

Yes, but if I was buying them from a store I could scan them too to check. I
think it's fair to assume the seller bought some sealed boxes - as he was
up front with me about removing the valuable figure and selling them separately.

At least they admitted it, for that I give them some credit. Having been willing
to admit it I suspect they will also be willing to include the suggested note
in the description, in the future. Personally, I would never buy a supposed
random figure from a seller than also sells non random figures.

It doesn't meet the mathematical definition of random, but the word is poorly
used and understood. It is easy to understand their mistake.

To be clear, they DID make a mistake and you ARE the person using the word properly.
But I would advise you not to buy random things from people on the internet.
It is commonly understood to mean "I will send you one and you will not
know which until it arrives". I would never believe that the stranger doesn't
know what they are sending. Your seller probably didn't think about that
someone would be 40. If you bought 1 or 10, you wouldn't have noticed.
Whether they are being honest or trying to trick you, their goal is to make something
seem more valuable than it is. Add up the market price of what you received.
Did you get a good deal? Would you have if there'd been 3 dragons?

It came out cheaper than buying them here in the states, even with shipping,
even without any dragons - so if this actually did happen by random chance, I
wouldn't be crushed - but I was definitely calculating the possibility of
getting a couple of them into my motivation for buying the lot.

He did refund me $18 as a customer service measure - so I'm at least appreciative
of that.
