Duplo had a race car in the 1990s that appeard in 5 sets, with 2 different part
numbers:

Part No: duploracer01 Name: Duplo Car Formula One with Yellow Wheels and Yellow Number 1 Pattern
*
duploracer01 Duplo Car Formula One with Yellow Wheels and Yellow Number 1 Pattern
Parts: DUPLO, Vehicle {Red}
in sets 2671, 2674, 2599.

Part No: 2217c01pb01 Name: Duplo Car Formula One with Blue Base with Yellow Number 2 Pattern
*
2217c01pb01 Duplo Car Formula One with Blue Base with Yellow Number 2 Pattern
Parts: DUPLO, Vehicle {Blue}
in sets 2607, 2609
There is a variant with a single stud in the cab, that was only used in a single
set:

Part No: duploracer02a Name: Duplo Car Formula One with Blue Base with Yellow Number 2 Pattern, 1 Stud in Cab
*
duploracer02a Duplo Car Formula One with Blue Base with Yellow Number 2 Pattern, 1 Stud in Cab
Parts: DUPLO, Vehicle {Blue}
in set 9157

According to a note on 2217c01pb01 the part number 2217 refers to the car base,
not the body, which is why this part number looks like a different colour race
car, but is in fact a totally different car:

Part No: 2217c02pb01 Name: Duplo Truck with Covered Bed and Yellow Base with 'ZOO' Pattern
*
2217c02pb01 Duplo Truck with Covered Bed and Yellow Base with 'ZOO' Pattern
Parts: DUPLO, Vehicle {Blue}
If you search for 2217c03pb01 you're redirected to 2218c03pb01 where a note
explains that 2218 is the body. This makes way more sense; referring to the composite
part by the sub part that differentiates them.

Part No: 2218c03pb01 Name: Duplo Car with 2 x 2 Studs and Green Base with Red Stripe and Octan Logo Pattern
*
2218c03pb01 Duplo Car with 2 x 2 Studs and Green Base with Red Stripe and Octan Logo Pattern
Parts: DUPLO, Vehicle {White}
Since 2218c03 exists, c01 and c02 must exist as well, and you'd expect them
to have the same body but in a different colour:

Part No: 2218c01 Name: Duplo Car with 2 x 2 Studs and Yellow Base
*
2218c01 Duplo Car with 2 x 2 Studs and Yellow Base
Parts: DUPLO, Vehicle {Blue}
Instead here the c01 refers to the colour of the base, and this part number exists
in 4 different body colours...

The way the "Duplo Car" is numbered makes sense; 2218 denotes the body,
the recognisable part of the car, and c## indicates the colour.
With that logic 2217c01pb01 should change to 2240c01pb01 and duploracer01 should
change to 2240c02pb02. Ideally though the pb numbers are changed, so pb01 = Number
1 pattern, and pb02 = Number 2 pattern...
2217c02pb01 should then be 2244c01pb01 since 2244 is the body of that car.
Question remains what to do with duploracer02. Is anyone willing to open one
up to see if the body with the single stud has a new mold number?

That turned into a longer post than I thought... Hope it makes sense?
