As per title, I've tried E-Bay selling for about 2 months now, I did a few
sales, evrything seemed to go well until I got hammered with fees and especially
TAXES on shipping...
Am located in MONTREAL, Quebec and due to my location not being "central"
in North America, the shipping fees would vary drastically from 12$ to 78$, which
at first I taught was going to be a BUYER ISSUE, since I was under the impression
the BUYER was paying for shipping...
For example, selling a 50$ Architecture set, I ended up getting charged 38$ in
fees and taxes as the BUYER was located very far from me and was (double wammy)
located in Canada... I was left with 12$ on a set I had paid 15$ to acquire.
The BUYER left me a good review, he was happy, but I wasn't... Obviously...
EBay charged taxes on the delivery fee that ended up making me lose money. I
learned from that mistake and tried to set up my listings in the US part of the
site, preventing shipping to Canada, this didn't work well either...
Long story short, I sort of was forced to give up on E-Bay and am now investigating
BrickLink as a poetential interface to SELL my sets I aquired already and am
currently stuck with. Any set under 100$ is just unsellable on E-Bay for me as
I would end up with an ROI so low (if not a loss) that I just can't justify
putting the work and effort into aquiring sets, handling them, shipping them
and so forth.
Now, here is my question: How does one open a BrickLink account without having
positive feedback? After watching a few videos on the subject, my understanding
is that I need to get good "ratings" in the "community" to then
be allowed to use the SELL feature located top right of the interface... But
how do I go about doing this?
Do I just comment on posts people made in the hopes someone finds my replies
useful and gives me a rating? Am not a huge LEGO fanatic yet, so my knowledge
is limited, I did learn a lot in the last 2 months, I love the energy and feel
of being involved in the trading and purchasing of LEGO sets, I aim to actually
do charity with the sets I cannot complete or sell by giving them away to
families who are having financial hardships and so forth, i already do help feed
the homeless in my city for years now, giving clothing and help to those in need,
but this doesn;t really translate that well in a mercantile endeavour like BUYING
and RESELLING Legos...
Any suggestions would help. How many positive ratings do I need before am allowed
to open my store? Am willing to ID myself, set up my banking information and
all that stuff, but am confused over the rating issue preventing me from doing
so.
Thank you for reading my wall of text, as this is my first post here, I wanted
to give context to my request.

You need to make a single purchase to gain one positive feedback to switch your
profile to seller. I would purchase from a largish store and leave a positive
feedback if the transaction goes well (not necessary, but makes a positive in
return more likely). That's it!
Side note, the fees here are much more reasonable. 3% on every item sold and
whatever fees your payment takes (which I think is around 3% for paypal and stripe/credit
card)

Thank you for the reply,
How do I buy things if my banking information isn't set up tho? I do have
a paypal and a stripe account, but I never inputed those in BL yet...

I sold a few items on Ebay and fees have about about 17% of the item price. I
don't know how you got this experience, but I guess you offered free shipping.
Fees here are 3% and are calculated over item price, not shipping costs and fees.

Thanks a lot.
I stopped ebay for a similar reason. But I do have many over priced items on
there to facilitate those fees.
The easiest way for you would be to make a few small purchases in your area and
pick them up to save fee's and shipping. Like a few minifigs and have the
seller leave you some good responses, then you can get your store opened.
During the set up of course Bricklink is also going to ask you for proof of stock
and a few other minor things.
There are a few hoops to jump through but nothing major.
