Could alternate ID 73200 be provided for minifigure legs 970c00?
I actually requested to have 73200 added to plain Legs a few years ago whereupon
it was added but I've been noticing in recent months that it has since been
removed?
I have a feeling this may be because 73200 has also been linked to plain legs
with different colour hips and may even be linked to certain printed Legs too?
That said it has primarily been used for plain legs and this has always been
my go to reference for bringing them up and so it would useful to have put back
in place imho

Your feeling was almost completely correct.
73200 was removed as an alternate item number for 970c00 because it is the design
number used for _any_ hips and legs color combinations that do not have a pattern.
With that in mind, however, we could still link 73200 to 970c00 if we add the
assembly suffix to it. The alternate item number would then be 73200c00. Unfortunately,
that requires knowing the asterisk search wildcard character to find it, but
it does make the number accessible.
Would 73200c00 be okay for both of your needs?
Please let me know.

Wow, that's next level information 😅🧠 I think 73200c00 would indeed work.

I see the issue now. If it's not possible to have a many-to-one relationship
(many Bricklink catalog IDs to one design ID), then your solution makes sense.
Should 970c88 then be 73200c88?

Yes, that is the issue. It is a one-to-one relationship.

Yes, 970c88 can have an alternate item number of 73200c88. I have gone ahead
and added it.

Personally I think 73200 should at least link to something here on Bricklink
and if it can’t be used to link to both Plain Legs and those with alternate hips
then I’d just link it to Plain Legs and then maybe just add a simple b on the
end for those with alternative hips 73200b
Now to be honest I can already get by as I know I can just type ’Plain Legs’
(Typing 73200 would be quicker and less cumbersome though)
However what I think is more important is catering for less experienced users
so they can take an official Lego reference and Bricklink direct them to, if
not the exact part they are looking for at least the right area whereas 73200
currently pulls up a complete blank on Bricklink? But not on Brickowl, Brickset
and even ebay and that in itself has to be far from ideal from Bricklinks perspective
if it’s vowing to be the ultimate market place and reference source?
I would even go one step further so that when someone types 73200 and only plain
Legs come up, create links under additional notes to all the alternate hips Legs
using the “This entry is similar to...”
That way using the 73200 reference gives people access to everything related
to this reference without the need to learn/memorize modified codes
If you take an official reference and modify it, I’m not sure it even becomes
useful to anyone at that point? Adding a simple b would seem a compromise as
at least its memorable and you can still bring up related parts using the original
reference 73200

That is not a problem that the catalog team can solve. That is a problem that
needs to be solved by the developers who have access to better the search functions
of BrickLink or create a many-to-one relationship for design numbers in the catalog.
Until that time, we are unfortunately left with what we are able to do, and I
think the solution offered is the best that we can do while keeping our current
systems consistent. I wish I could change it, but I can't. And I have asked
for improvements in this area for years.

'b' would mean a variant, and these legs do not have variants. They are
just different colors. This could be helped with the relationships, but the relationships
area gets extremely long then, and we already have issues with some relationships
taking up way too much screen real estate when used. We have to consider a lot
of things when deciding how to best handle something in the current system.
Thanks for your thoughts. They help to keep us pushing for better solutions from
the BrickLink side.

The developers don't need to change anything since 73200 already used to
be in place for plain Legs and that was already good enough as it worked and
was once a useful reference here?
If you feel it necessary to modify the official codes why not just do it for
the mixed Hip/Leg combos only?
The 'b' can mean anything you want it to mean but either way the mixed
combo Legs are basically just a variation of the more common plain matching coloured
Hips and Legs
