Hello everyone, i'm making this post seeking some help as i'm facing
a bit of a conundrum.
I'm not a native speaker so i apologise in advance for any mistake i might
make.
After inheriting our grandfather's house a little over a year ago we've
started organising the place as there was a lot of things we couldn't keep.
Among these objects there were quite a lot of lego sets, including sealed ones.
Among thoses we've stumbled upon a lot of Old Legoland sets from the 80's
and 90's.
By far what looks to be the most valuable one we've found is the Crater Crawler
Set 6885, sealed and in very good condition. From what i could gather online,
it is apparently worth around 300€ or more which I found quite surprising.
Only problem being that according to the websites i used (bricklink and brickeconomy),
very few of these guys have been sold sealed in the last few years, thus making
it hard to estimate if the price i found is actually trustworthy.
One guy came up recently to make us an offer at 50€, saying that the set was
at most worth 70€, and that we were selling it for 3 times the market price.
Thus my question being, was that guy trying to rip us off or is the price we
found online incorrect ? If not, are the websites i used unreliable ? What would
you say this set is worth in this condition ?
Sorry for all of these questions i'm really not knowledgeable on these things.

Lego falls into a few categories, then those into a few smaller categories. A
collector, a builder, an investor and a reseller.
A collector/investor are closely related. A person who wants something to look
at and own because he/she is in awe of that lego set. When that person gets sick
of looking at it, owning it or its value has increased significantly he may or
may not choose to sell or swap it.
A builder is someone who can't wait to tear that box open and build the set,
display it and eventually may swap it or sell it as "used".
Finally a reseller is obviously someone who buys things low and sells things
high.
But regardless of what a person or a family is, the value of a lego set is based
on what someone would pay for that item, how bad they want it and its rarity.
Is the 1988 Futuron Crawler rare? Yes it is. It is sealed/new-that in itself
makes it rare. It is 36 years old (1988). Only a few have been sold over the
last few years and only 1 of those was new. There is a 4th new set available
now for about 500.00. I also own a new/sealed one I purchased at a garage sale.
I recall paying 180.00 (canadian for it about 2 years ago). That is 120 Euro's.
I purchased it at the time knowing its minimum value to someone like me was 300.00
as an Investor/Collector. I think the honest value is in the 300-350 Canadian
range. That is 200-240 Euro's.
But in saying that you need to find someone who would purchase it. Bricklink
is the place for that sale, purely because its "Global".
If there was an issue its the "space exploration theme". Those people
are not common opposed to Star Wars fans and so forth.
But 50 Euro's.....Your grandfather would roll over in his grave if you sold
it for 50. Open a Bricklink shop and advertise it for 200 Euros. 100% you will
get that amount, might take several months and that sale would likely occur around
Christmas time.
Yes it's rare, Yes it will take time to sell, yes you were right it's
worth more that 50-70 Euros.

Thank you for taking the time to write such an elaborate answer, it was very
insightful and helped me clear a lot of the confusion I had about this whole
ordeal
I'll follow you on your advice and put it up for sale on Bricklink as soon
as I have enough time to create a shop.
Again thank you for all the advices and explanations you gave me, it was very
thoughtful and kind of you.

The price of sealed vintage sets depends on many factors including the condition
of box (is it in pristine condition?)
Also, how do you want to sell it?
Larger the marketplace, higher the price. So I won't expect to sell it for
high price on facebook, local websites,...
How long are you willing to wait?
You can quickly sell a set for 100 Euro, but you need to wait two months to sell
it for 150 Euro and maybe two years to sell it for 300 Euro. How long are you
willing to wait?
If you see a guy listed the set for 300 Euro, this is what he is asking but nobody
has paid that yet because it is still available. There is a difference between
asking price and selling price. I can also list the set on Ebay for 30000 Euro
this doesn't mean its price is 30000 Euro.
On bricklink and Ebay, you can start with a high price and gradually reduce it.
But note that I received about 83% of final price when I sell something on ebay
(total fees are about 16-17%), however I get about 93% of the final price on
bricklink (BL fees are 3% and PayPal fees about 3 or 4%)
In general, bricklink is safer than Ebay.
I don't know if 75 Euro is fair or not. It is possible a sealed copy was
sold on Ebay for about that price but if the condition of your set is pristine,
I think you can sell it for about 200 Euro (roughly speaking, I did not do any
research)
One option is to do auction on Ebay, then you sell it to the person who bids
highest (and pay high fees).

The others have given you great advice, but I'll just give you the short
answer
Anything from the 80's and 90's is GOLD and worth alot/very easy to sell.
Especially space, pirates and castle.

A rare sets is sold infrequently because it is rare. You could try listing it
for 300 Euro and see how it goes. Another alternative would be an eBay auction
with a minimum bid.
