I have instant checkout set up for Canada and just fulfilled an order heading
to Quebec; but I had to invoice for some reason. Not a big deal. Did what I
normally do for domestic orders and put the shipping costs in and calculated
the VAT and put that in the seller collected taxes square (because that was really
the only option besides additional charges). Buyer paid promptly.
Then when I go in to the order there is no line for taxes collected. Did I make
a boo-boo?

why are you collecting sales tax for Canada? sorry if I'm misunderstanding
but unless you are registered in Canada with a GST/HST number you aren't
allowed to collect sales tax within Canada and the buyer will pay it at the border

They thought they need to collect it and forget to add it

A US seller wouldn't collect taxes for Canada
Oh oops. I keep seeing all these posts about people being double billed for
taxes (by BL and again at customs) that I assumed it's because the forms
weren't filled out right. I'm in a covid fog today.

That can happen if BrickLink automatically collects the taxes (which it
doesn't currently do for Canada), and either
(1) the seller doesn't include BL's VAT number/doesn't submit the
IOSS number electronically
or
(2) the seller does everything right but customs makes a mistake and charges
the buyer anyway

Got it, thank you. I stopped international shipping for about 18 months because
it was such a PITA and people didn't like the shipping rates from the US;
so I've largely forgotten the workflow. Still need to figure out why this
one didn't go through instant checkout though.

If you stopped selling international you might not have the international part
checked of correctly for instant check out. I would check it again and see if
it is checked as invoice buyer.

It was an error on my part. I used a standard quasi large box from LEGO that
I normally send up to 10 pounds in, but it had been a while since I set it up
and falsely remembered using a different box for these shipments. So my max
dimension settings for that (only) method were too small.

So glad you were able to figure out the problem, I know how frustrating it can
be to have an issue and not know the reason. I hope you have many successful
international sales from here on out!

I tested it and it worked for me, tho the cost seemed extra high to canada. is
that the cost via pirate ship? stores that have pirate ship often ship to Canada
for about $10-$13 USD. perhaps on the non-instant checkout order, 1 or more items
in the order weren't instant checkout available? (such as missing weight
or dimensions)

That's by design because it's a single 576 cu/in box I used in pirate
ship for the calculations. I did that because the whole reason I started doing
Canada again was for folks up there who were wanting 10+ of the GWPs. So if
you want to buy one minifig, it's going to put you in that box at the 0-16
ounce rate which was ~$17.

Found the problem; the max volume is 576 cu/in and their order was 1,183. Looks
like I need to go back and add some baby boxes and some jumbo boxes.
