As far as I know, based on my own sets from the 70's and 80's, the original
minifigure tanks all had the "neck-nubs" on the hoop. I've actually
never seen any without the nubs.

I have seen some without those neck nubs in my very earliest classic space sets.
So the absence of the nubs doesn't mean that they are fake.

I was very surprised by this because I had most of the earliest classic space
sets and I don't remember any airtanks w/o nubs but it appears to be true!

I'd have to pull some older air tanks out and look at them but I don't
recall seeing that prominent of a sprue mark on them.

No obvious sprue marks at all on any of them (but also none without nubs ...
we used to be a proper country).

OK, so I pulled out my copy of the Legoland Idea Book
and I can confirm (contrary to what I previously thought) that old air tanks
(without nubs) do indeed have a sprue mark on the right (looking at the back
as they would be worn on a minifigure) tank, in the spot where it's shown
in the OP.

It's not a recognized color just a color variation of LG as I had mentioned.

I would use an actual image (if possible) of the tanks rather than the stock
image. One person said he did not know of the tanks in this color. I don't
recall if I have ever had them but have had many of the 1x1 plate w/clip in that
color.

I believe it is made of nylon and was only used for a few parts as a test (the
clip and air tanks being in that small group).

There is a color variation of light gray that the 1x1 modified plates w/clip
were made in. Much darker than LG or LBG, matches that airtank.

That's true but as far as I know the air tanks were never made in that color
(nor was anything else apart from those plates w/clip).

It is more of the darker light gray variant. Not bluish gray. Can't get a
good picture but it has the sprue mark on one of the tanks.
