There are a lot of options.

If you provide some info, we can make some suggestions.

Age
Sets you/he would like to motorize
Type of sets he likes

First of all, you are an awesome grandpa! Last time I was using motors I used
the "Power Functions" system. There are a ton of youtube videos and some
amazing books. I'm a huge fan of Japanese LEGO designer Yoshihito Isogawa.
He has a bunch of books teaching you how to make different mechanical systems,
drive trains, gear set ups. Its amazing what you can do with LEGO.

Here is one of his books: https://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Power-Functions-Idea-Book/dp/1593276885

This was my go-to motor for my GBC and technic creations. M Motor: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=54950&name=Electric%209V%20Battery%20Box%204%20x%2011%20x%207%20without%20Battery%20Box%20Covers&category=%5BElectric,%20Battery%20Box%5D#T=S&C=86&O={%22color%22:86,%22iconly%22:0}

This is the necessary battery pack for the M-Motor: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=59510c01&name=Electric%209V%20Battery%20Box%204%20x%2011%20x%207%20PF%20with%20Orange%20Switch%20and%20Dark%20Bluish%20Gray%20Covers&category=%5BElectric,%20Battery%20Box%5D#T=S&O={%22iconly%22:0}

I haven't used the newer "Powered Up" motor system. But you can check
out those parts here: https://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?catType=S&catString=721.1016

Hope this points you in the right direction.

Well a good set would be 8293-1 it brings all power functions stuff to make things
motorized but it is a bit pricey. I think the best option is to buy each part
separated as it may be cheaper.
