I have been on this site for many years now, and have done my share of purchases
and sales. Typically I charge the exact price it costs me to ship a given package,
sometimes I do this at a aloss i.e., I charge extra for the box (1-2 $), but
do not charge anything for the air bubbles or my hot glue gun.

Sometime back I ordered few parts ($5.00 worth), and the seller asked for $6.00
for shipping and $3.00 extra charges.

Maybe I have not kept up with the 'business', but isn't this extreme?

I don't know what the "extra charges" are all about - were they from
"lot fees"? - but I could see $6.00 shipping if the parts were inexpensive
but large or awkward.

Seems a bit high but using the word EXTREME for $3 seems a bit.. extreme?

It depends what was needed to ship the parts. The cost of the parts often has
little impact on the packaging needed or the picking time if they charge for
that / per lot.

Maybe it is extreme, but you have the option of choosing another seller.

I have filled carts with the exact same parts, and noticed shipping from as low
as $4.80 to as high as $8 (all in the US).
One seller I buy from has fees that are added to shipping, but on checkout, not
shown in shipping cost when starting the checkout. I have come to expect this
from this seller, and probably would not buy from them if they didn't have
such a good inventory of the parts I like along with fast shipping. At least
I know what to expect when comparing carts before checkout.

LOL Try buying from New Zealand. I don't even bother looking at any USA or
British shops on here. More often than not your prices and shipping ARE Extreme
in the true meaning of the word. IE more than my order by a long long shot and
simply not woth even looking at which is a real shame as you've got some
great stores.

That is because of where you live and the price of international shipping. Postage
for a cheap order from a seller on the other side of the world will always appear
expensive compared to the cost of the order.

Plus, NZ GST is added to the BL total now when there’s an item¹ below NZD 1,000.

¹ Yep, per item for NZ (and NO), not the total like in EU, UK, and AU.

Does that add up in fractional increments of percentages that will add cents
per item in the shopping cart to the total, or does the overall total stay the
same regardless?

Cheers ...

There’s a separate line in the cart for taxes and it’s updated each time you
add (or remove) an item.

It’s the threshold for when BL has to collect that’s per item.  NZ (and NO) has(ve)
the most complicated scheme so far.

For instance, if you buy one set at (local)$1,001 and one minifigure at (local)$1:
— for AU, BL doesn’t have to collect GST because the total is greater than AUD 1,000,
— for NZ, BL has to collect GST on the minifigure because it’s less than NZD 1,000,
and Customs (so, at delivery) will collect the GST on the set.

It's not just that. If I were to look at a UK seller's store, all prices
would get inflated by the exchange rate for AUD to GBP. It's not that I mind,
it's just that because they are more expensive in searches, the parts in
their store will be lower down the list of items for sale.

It can make some items that would normally be fairly cheap much more expensive
if the only market to purchase them from is in the UK. Fortunately, this does
not often happen. It is a very tricky balancing act, paying higher rates for
parts and shipping is by it's nature less appealing than lower rates for
parts and shipping, for items that can be obtained elsewhere.

It's the way that the supply and demand in the market works. I learned this
from experience, and by setting up test shopping carts in various stores over
the years.

Maybe someday I will no longer care so much about the prices for buying something
and can afford more expensive rates. But, as a buyer, I will always shop wherever
I can get the better bargains.

Just my shopping experiences on BrickLink thus far.

Cheers ...

for common parts, I buy from Canada. But I still order from few other countries
like Denmark, Sweden, UK, Germany,

The last time I received an order from New Zealand was for two minifigs:
Cost of parts: 25.19
Shipping costs: 11.85
Extra parts: 0
Total: $37.04 USD

Shipping costs for a 1kg package would be about $30 USD.

You may consider looking at stores in Canada and other countries.
