I ordered window part #4193 (trans-clear) from a seller and received a window
that was slightly larger on the sides and didn't match up to the one I already
had. So, I took my glasses off to read the part number, it was M296-1. I tried
looking it up on here (and google) and could not find anything with that bit
of info. I also did not see the LEGO logo anywhere on the glass. The only thing
I did notice was that on the item details page it showed 35157 as a variation,
it having the larger sides/lips - but in the photo it shows the LEGO logo and
part number.

So, with all that in mind, is this piece genuine?

thanks

Hi,
Even with the set 60154 (City) Bus station where they appears as alternate parts,
I only have "old" parts 4183

Part No: 4183 Name: Glass for Train Door with Lip on Top and Bottom
*
4183 Glass for Train Door with Lip on Top and Bottom
Parts: Window, Glass & Shutter {Trans-Light Blue}
And they all have a number like "1-02", "4-02", "8-02"...
Not a number like your part. The lip on sides seems to be a bit too large, but
I can't compare.
I hope someone here have the newest ones to help you !

Thank you much. I’ll email the seller and let them know they sent me a non-Lego
piece.

The M is normally found on Mega Bloks parts.

  Thanks Stuart for this second advice

FWIW I have a fairly extensive database of Mega elements, but this piece isn't
among them.

Stuart9 is absolutely correct about he M prefix for part numbers, but
pretty much all LEGO-scale Mega elements have a four or five digit number
following the prefix letter, like M0910 or M11851.

So although I can't tell you what brand this mystery element is, I'm
pretty confident that it's not Mega.
