Anyone have tips on getting rid of the smell of fabric softener from Legos? I
have some Lego plants that were just purchased from someone and the smell is
insane. Tried really hot water and strong hand soap, hot water and vinegar, hot
water and lemon juice, hot water and some enzyme pet odor remover. Nothing is
getting rid of the smell. It's particularly bad on the plant pieces (different
plastic) https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=6255#T=C.

If it's anything like the smell of tobacco smoke (disgusting seller!!!!),
then leave parts in a well ventilated area for a week or so and the smell will
eventually fade. There are definitely worse things for Lego to smell of!

Point taken! But fabric softener and clothes detergent smell is one of my least
favorites. Admittedly, it's a pet peeve of mine. But my sinuses actually
do get agitated from it. So intense. I know some people really like the smell
- my sister does - but I try to avoid it.

I dumped my Lego purchase out on the ottoman last night and it still smells!

I would try a paste of baking soda and water on 1 or 2 pieces, leave it on for
an hour, rinse off and see how that works. Also in an open container in a well
ventilated area for a few days might work as well.

I'll try this if the Dawn doesn't work. And I agree that leaving them
to air out should help as well.

That's funny John P, because: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1214521
Apparently fragrance preference is subjective. Not that I want my Legos to smell
like men's deoderant either.

Possibly worth trying. I know not everyone will agree, but Dawn soap smells pretty
strong to me too. But better than fabric softener, and probably doesn't stick
as much to the item being cleaned. I'll give this a go.

I would prefer a soap that is not tested on animals. My sister uses it and half
her house smells like Dawn all the time. Yucky.

What does “Dawn” smell like?

AFAICT, it’s a dish soap from Procter & Gamble that’s not sold here in France.
The “corresponding” brand in “not America” seems to be Fairy (not sold in France
either, except as dishwasher tabs, never tried them).  I don’t see anything special
about it.

Anyway, dish soap isn’t that smelly or persistent.  What’s so special with Dawn?
Is it some kind of Febreze for dishes?

There may be scented versions, but plain ole regular Dawn has only a very slight
soapy smell. It's not perfumy at all.

Thanks Jen.

I couldn’t find anything that said it was special / why people would say “use
Dawn soap” and not “use dish soap.”

Well, there's Dawn soap which is awesome and makes tons of great suds. Then
there is 'dish soap' which means they were too cheap to buy Dawn and
it will be too runny, too smelly, and make suds that last only 2 seconds.

You know it’s not the suds that clean, right?

Dawn does a really good job of cleaning LEGO, suds or not. I have left many a
sink full to soak over night with great cleaning results. It is also really good
at cutting through grease and oil on dishes etc. Take it for what it is worth
but their ads show people using the soap to remove oil from animals and birds
caught in oil spills.

You could put them in a small unventilated room and chain smoke cigarettes.

I often wonder how strongly people must smell of Tide to transfer so much scent
to their LEGO. Then I remember that a lot of LEGO is probably stored in the laundry
area. I have actually got Used lots off ebay that someone had put laundry sheets
in the box on purpose as if whatever smell they were trying to cover could be
worse than laundry smell!

Anyway, I have found that good ol' fresh air cures this ill. Lay them out
on a tray outside and cover with a screen or very light cloth and wait a week
or so. This is assuming your neighborhood isn't covered in a fresh layer
of Canada's Best Smoke at the moment.

Good luck!

Yeah 2x this. I've bought a few cigarette lots off ebay, have had several
"mold" and "b.o." lots as well.... and one that was perfume that
reeked so bad I could barely be near it. Ugh.

Most of the smell seems worse because its being kept in a container. Air always
worked great.

It could be that people are literally washing their LEGO in the washing machine
with detergent (and fabric softener? ). I know that some people in this very
forum have suggested using a washing machine to clean used LEGO but I generally
assumed that was on the cold delicate cycle, in a laundry bag and without detergent.

Then I remember that a lot of LEGO is probably stored in the laundry

What, you don't want your LEGO smelling like burnt pizza?

You Can treat it like you would a Bad Smell in a refrigerator get a Box of Arm
and Hammer Baking Soda, open the box slightly and put it in a closed bin with
the offending LEGO for about 3-7 Days, be careful not to jostle it around to
much or you may need to rinse the parts off after to get any spilled baking soda
off. They also make specific Deodorizer products that you put in shoes they
may work too.

Hope that Helps!

I would try Simple Green. It does not have a heavy fragrance. It’s what I have
been using to soak my Lego parts in.
Good luck!

There is another way. Leave the Lego in a room with a young male cat.
