As I’m looking at this Lego set (40179 Personalised Mosaic Portrait) and seeing
what is contained in it I can’t help but notice that within it the 1x1 plate
pieces are contained within their own separate boxes by color and they all contain
a number the 7 digit element number and was wondering if that would qualify as
their own “sets” or something of the sorts, I personally think they would but
am asking this question for input so I can apply it to other things if I have
questions in the future

Thank you!

If I understand, you want to know if BrickLink inventories the bags that come
from sets, specifically Mosaic sets. Currently, the answer is NO.

BrickLink does not currently have set inventories set up to recognize what items
come in which bags from sets. That is actually something that a lot of people
have asked about.

In the past, specifically from the 2003 run of Mosaic kids, LEGO DID actually
separately sell the internal bags as single items. It was a one-of-a-kind thing
happened due to over-production of some of the colors of 1x1 plates.

The story I heard was that Lego ran out of the bags of White 1x1 plates and rather
than produce more of those, they chose to stop offering the sets and decided
to liquidate the remaining stock of all the other bags of 1x1 plates. This could
be incorrect or partially incorrect information.

Somewhere in my personal Lego collection, I have stored away several dozen bags
of 1x1 plates in all the other colors (Black, old Dark Gray, old Light Gray,
and Very Light Gray) that I was able to purchase at the time this happened.

Now that I think about it, since these bags of 1x1 plates were sold this way
at one time, I am surprised that BrickLink does not show them anywhere in the
BL catalog. They were a legitimate item that lots of people were able to purchase
and they must have had a stock-keeping number assigned to them.

A look thru the BL catalog DOES have a listing for the bag with all of other
parts from the 2003 mosaic kits. But no entries for the bags of 1x1 plates.

Specifically in these mosaic set these pieces come in bags in boxes with the
element ID on them and I don’t know if that would count as it’s own thing regardless
if Lego sold them separately, if not that’s fine, and if so, what other things
might we not be cataloging right because certain minifigure capes and other large
parts come in boxes with the element ID on them and I feel like I’ve seen those
listed but can remember exactly, but if we subtract the pieces inside the box
and only think of the box itself then would that be able to be listed to the
catalog like boxes to sets? I know I’ve seen instances of that occurring.

Again thanks for any help and knowledge that is provided as I’m just in the pursuit
of knowledge so I don’t mistakenly try to put something in the catalog and waste
the admins time when it shouldn’t be added.

Many bags have an element ID on them.  Nowadays, it’s only as a QR-code… but
it’s still there.
Several big sets come with big inside boxes.  And those have an element ID too.
None are in the catalogue.

I think the rubbers & capes boxes are different: they contain one (or two) part(s)
only and keeping them unopened to protect the parts and “authentify” them is
useful for the marketplace.

Thank you for the information this will help me in the future if I have a question
about something like this and appreciate it so much!
