I'm going through and placing orders for a project I'm putting together.
I'm quite new to BL, and new to buying on the secondary market.

I place a fairly large order, 1082 pieces to be exact. Would it be normal or
expected that there were some miscounts and wrong pieces in the order once it
arrived? Am I expecting too much or being unreasonable if I were to reach out
about these errors on such a large order in a very polite and empathetic manner?

Again, if this is to be expected when dealing with mom/pop brickshops then I'm
cool with it. I don't want to come across as a prick or unreasonable. Just
seeing what everyone else's experience may be.

Thanks.

Welcome!

it should be expected for it all to arrive but we are all human so its "expected"
that there will be mistakes from time to time but if you find any mistakes bring
it up with the seller and they will usually refund the parts or reship them out

Again, if this is to be expected when dealing with mom/pop brickshops then I'm

I routinely overlook shortages of parts in the orders I receive, as long as it's
just 1 or 2, and the parts are cheap. (Just as often I find a couple extras,
so it sort of evens out.) If I'm missing something that was on the more
expensive end of the order or a significant percentage of a lot, I let the seller
know. Usually responses from sellers who missed a few parts are very professional
here on Bricklink.

Thank you to those that replied. I’m newer to this and trying to gauge appropriate
response. I’ve had a few orders that were short and overlooked them (total of
$0.16) as no big deal.

I did respond to a tellar and was met with some unexpected rudeness when a larger
$100+ order was incorrect. I worded my response in a friendly and empathetic
tone and was just taken aback when I got their curt response. Just wanted to
know if was in the wrong or not and what to expect moving forward.

I appreciate the feedback and in the future will adjust my expectations accordingly.

Unfortunately some sellers are just like that

Welcome

As we are all just human, we all forget or make a mistake, it should not be
normal, but it is expected.

No, you should always reach out to the seller on mistakes, if only to help the
seller try and correct his mistake and inventory

If you buy 100 of a cheap part and receive 99, I would not mention it if the
rest of the order was okay and timely.

But if I order 2 more expensive parts and only one turns up…

Always talk to the seller first, let them have a chance to correct it.
Recently I had a part missing, an oar or a lance, I contacted the seller and
yes, it was on his desk
He offered to send it, but that would be high cost of sending a 5 cent part,
so I declined and told him no worries.
Had this same missing item been important and of more value, I most likely would
have him send it.
It has happened to me too, you bite the bullet and ship out.

Thanks.

16 cents missing on a 32 cents order is different than 16 cents missing from
a $100 order…

$100+ order was incorrect.

Some seller are like that, but most are nice about it.
And not to say this is your fault, as you are new, but if it is whom I think
it is from your feedback.
Read their feedback

I worded my response in a friendly and empathetic
tone and was just taken aback when I got their curt response. Just wanted to
know if was in the wrong or not and what to expect moving forward.

Maybe try again, have someone else read it before sending, sometimes we don’t
read intentions in our own words, but others do.
Or, highly possible, the seller is an @$$

I appreciate the feedback and in the future will adjust my expectations accordingly.

Read feedback before buying, also read feedback the seller gives back to negatives
and neutrals.

Good luck,
Maxx

Welcome!
AS a buyer on Bricklink for 19 years I can tell you not to worry about a few
minor pieces missing out of an order but the best way to prevent a shortage is
by buying 1-2 extra of each piece unless of course it is a rarer and / or more
expensive piece.
I usually won't bother to contact the store unless my order is missing more
than $1.00 worth of parts.
As a side note, you can bookmark stores that you like or dislike and leave
yourself a short note about why you like or dislike that store. Stores you
bookmark as dislike will not show up when you go to buy items.
