Proof of the existence of these elements in the color of flat silver (I hope
you see it well in these photos).
More likely, that is Pearl Light Gray / 131 Silver (which does look "flatter"
in this polypropylene plastic) and 296 Cool Silver (which BL does not recognize
at all and is also considered Pearl Light Gray here). Modern Flat Silver (315
Silver Metallic) wasn't introduced until 2010.

The second photo looks to have parts in both Pearl Light Gray and the unrecognized
silver. Not sure about the first one. 53584 is the only part I have yet to confirm.

The BrickLink colors Flat Silver and Pearl Light Gray were historically used
to describe the perceived color difference between parts that were both made
in LEGO color 131 Silver but made of different plastics. This was an okay solution
back in the day, because people did not have widespread knowledge of the colors
LEGO used or that different plastics caused the same color to look slightly different.
However, what BrickLink failed to recognize back then was that there was another
color that was used for a short time as a replacement for LEGO color 131 Silver.
This was LEGO color 296 Cool Silver.
What you are showing in your photographs are the same parts produced both in
LEGO color 131 Silver and LEGO color 296 Cool Silver. Unfortunately, LEGO color
296 Cool Silver was never formally recognized on BrickLink and was lumped in
with Pearl Light Gray.
Fast forward to the year 2010...
LEGO releases a new color as a replacement for LEGO color 131 Silver. This was
LEGO color 315 Silver Metallic, and it was introduced in the Hero Factory theme.
Once again, BrickLink failed to recognize this as a new color and lumped it under
the BrickLink color Flat Silver that had already been used. This greatly compounded
the problem with all of the silver colors.
So what we have today in the BrickLink catalog is a complete mess when it comes
to all of these colors.
What BrickLink has begun to do is transition away from using the BrickLink color
Flat Silver to describe parts that appeared in LEGO color 131 Silver prior to
the introduction of LEGO color 315 Silver Metallic in 2010. Along with this,
LEGO color 131 Silver and LEGO color 296 Cool Silver will both fall under BrickLink
Pearl Light Gray.
This will not be a quick process, but it is slowly being migrated towards as
requests come in to modify older inventories or submit older part images.
In the end, BrickLink will hopefully have only parts made in either LEGO color
131 Silver or LEGO color 296 Cool Silver under Pearl Light Gray and only parts
made in LEGO color 315 Silver Metallic under Flat Silver. This will create a
noticeable color transition point for the silver colors in the catalog around
the year 2010, which is what is needed right now. Basically, we need to get BrickLink
Flat Silver isolated to one LEGO color.
Eventually, we may add the color Cool Silver to the catalog to account for that
color used around the 2005-2006 period and lumped in with Pearl Light Gray. But
for now, that is not on the near-term horizon.

Does that mean requests can now be submitted to start a transition over to proper
colors? 2000-2007 is a good place to start. It might also be a good idea to look
at sets after 2010 containing Pearl Light Gray, as it’s highly unlikely that
any of them actually do.

No. This process is currently being and will continue to be handled from the

Does this include PCCs? I have a full list of 148 and 296 IDs that I intentionally
did not add, in the hopes that they might soon be added to Bricklink under their
own colors. Clearly, this will not be the case with 296 for a long time.

As always, 296 element numbers may be submitted under Pearl Light Gray and 148
element numbers may be submitted under Pearl Dark Gray.

Just received confirmation that 4493182 is Cool Silver.
First Cool Silver ID I've seen in the 4493 range. Considering that Silver
picks back up just a few hundred later, it would seem that this is one of the
last if not, the last Cool Silver part made.

Nice! 👍
I had a feeling it might be.
